Chapter 0450
“After my ‘death,‘ he gave Alden my last name, and, well, the rest is history. Alden wants to know more about me, but unfortunately, neither Theodore nor I can tell him much beyond what we know. That’s why he reached out to you, but with so much work, that idea has faded. Now he’s set on reviving Palmer Group. Why? I guess out of nostalgia. Alden’s a good kid, and I know you’re guiding him.”
“Peter, I still can’t understand how you so easily pushed us out of your life. Call me crazy for wanting you to look for us, even knowing what would happen. But Mary suffered a lot because of you. Why didn’t you look for her?”
Peter looked at him, knowing it wouldn’t be easy to convince this man. He decided to be honest and lay it all out.
“Marcus, to be completely honest, when I got out of the hospital, the first thing I did was look for Mary. I was worried about my daughter. All the time I spent in rehab, I was tormented by thoughts of the two of them. I have to admit, they were my strength to endure that damn rehab. Theodore helped me. The clues were there–anyone who truly wanted to find her could have done so easily,” Petter said seriously.
“Then why didn’t you?”
“Marcus, I did! But you were already with her. You’d been married to Mary for over two years. My daughter was calling you Dad. The woman who was supposed to be my fiancée looked at you with so much love. And me? I simply didn’t remember her. How could I have shown up and ruined all of that? I didn’t remember her! I wanted to see her, hoping to recall something from my past life, but when I saw her, I couldn’t. Her gaze showed nothing but love and admiration for you.
“Would you have preferred I showed up after almost eight years? Did you want me to take your wife and daughter away from you? I couldn’t do that–especially knowing I didn’t feel anything for her, knowing I couldn’t remember all the love I once had.”
“If Mary loves you now, it’s because of everything you’ve been through together over the years. As far as I know, I only spent a few months with her. She was my partner for just four months. How do you compare four months to more than three years? And even less so now–you’ve been together for fifteen years.
“If she were to see me now, she wouldn’t find anything. She wouldn’t see the man she met twenty years ago. That’s why I never looked for her. All this mess started because my son Alden wanted to avenge my death. But if it were up to me, I would’ve stayed silent all this time. You wouldn’t know anything about me, and I’d still be at peace. I’m sorry, my friend.”
“Peter, when I heard about your death, it broke me. You were my brother–I loved you. What happened with Mary was never planned. A lot happened after you died. I promised, standing before your remains, that I would take care of your wife and daughter. Then I lost track of them for almost three years. When I found her again, we started spending time together because of Serenity. It was always because of her. Falling in love was never in my plans. I would’ve never even considered taking her from you. You were so happy with her I couldn’t have taken away what brought you back to life.”
