Peter walked back and forth, having signed all the paperwork and arranged for a trusted doctor to attend to Celeste. It was past 11:00 pm when a nurse informed him that the surgery had started, and they would notify him as soon as there was any news. 

After nearly & hours, Dr. Mandel, a doctor Peter knew personally, came out and approached him, “Peter” 

“Dr. Mandel, how is my… wife?” 

“Peter, everything went very well. Now comes the recovery. Fortunately, we treated the injury in time. Although the fracture looked severe, she’s been very strong and brave. Now that I think about it, I can see why she’s your partner, you’re just as strong.” 

Dr. Mandel had been the doctor who treated Peter 20 years ago when everyone thought he was dead. Back then, the young doctor had just graduated as an orthopedic specialist. The more experienced doctors envied him because he absorbed knowledge like a sponge. 

“What time will she be taken to her room?” 

“In about half an hour, she’ll be moved to her room. After surgery, she’ll need special care at home. I heard from the nurses that she has no family. Her case reminds me so much of yours. Take care of her!” 

Mandel, I assure you that I will do everything I can to help her recover. She will be with me at home, and I promise she won’t lack anything. We will follow your instructions to the letter.” 

“I’m glad to see you’re finally moving forward with your life, Mr. Palmer. The years you spent in the hospital were tormenting, but seeing you now, it truly gives me satisfaction. Your girlfriend is a strong woman. The femur fracture will take at least six months to heal, and the other leg, I can perform a small surgery to prevent the right femur from breaking. She must be patient, her recovery will be slow, but sooner than you think, she’ll walk like nothing ever happened.” 

“Did you say six months?” 

“Yes, unfortunately. Besides being an exposed fracture, the bone broke into three parts. I managed to reconstruct everything so it wouldn’t be shorter, but for the bone to heal, it will take time. Then, with physical therapy and lots of patience, she will return to normal. Your wife was very lucky. The structure that fell on her could have killed her. Honestly, we see accidents like this every day at the hospital–one mistake and a life is lost over something so trivial.” 

“I’m going to investigate how this incident happened. Just imagining the pain Celeste went through makes my blood boil. I don’t even want to think what would have happened if that had fallen on my grandson” 

“You should be thankful that, although your wife is temporarily incapacitated, she’s alive. Well, Mr. Palmer, I must leave now. Your wife should be in her room by now, it would be a good idea for you to see her. She will need all the help she can get to heal. I’ll come to see her during the day.” 

“Let me know if it’s difficult for you to come here. If possible, I could have her transferred to the hospital where you work 

“Currently, I work at Gemellia Hospital. If you could manage the transfer, it would be much better for me. That way, I can attend to any emergency firsthand.” 

“As soon as morning comes, I’ll handle the transfer and we’ll meet at your hospital. Theodore will contact you to arrange for the payment of your fees.” 

“Thank you, Mr. Palmer! I’ll see you in a few hours at the hospital.”

After bidding farewell to Dr. Mandel, Peter headed to Celeste’s room. She had just been moved there and was still asleep. Lying there, she seemed as if nothing had happened. He pulled up a chair, sat beside her, took her hand, and rested his head on the edge of the bed. 

A couple of hours later, Celeste finally woke up when they came to check her IV and medication. Peter was still asleep, holding her hand. She was still groggy from the surgeries. 

“Miss Johnson, it’s good to see you awake! How do you feel? Do you have any discomfort?” 

“Uh No! Not at all, just a little dizzy.” 

“I know, Miss, it was almost 4 hours of surgery. Your husband has been anxiously waiting for you to wake up, look, it seems that exhaustion has caught up with him.” 

“Husband?”

“Mr. Palmer told us he’s your husband. He’s been very worried about you, hardly moved from his spot” 

Celeste felt a bit disoriented by the statement, but knowing Peter, she understood why he had said it. If he hadn’t claimed it, he probably wouldn’t have been allowed close to her, and she figured he had used that little lie to get 

around it. 

A few minutes later, Peter woke up and, seeing that Celeste was awake, sighed with relief. 

“Celeste… How are you? I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to fall asleep. I was just so tired.” 

“Don’t worry, my dear husband… You needed rest.” 

When Peter heard her say “my dear husband,” he felt a surge of warmth in his chest. On one hand, he felt a wave of happiness, and on the other, he felt a little embarrassed for using that little trick, although he knew it wasn’t the first time. 

“How do you feel?” Peter asked, concerned. 

“I feel like I’ve been crushed by a shelf!” Celeste said with a pained expression. 

“Celeste! That’s exactly what happened!” 

“I know! That’s exactly how I feel!” 

“I’m going to change your hospital.” 

“Why? Didn’t they treat me well here?” 

“Yes, but the doctor who operated on you is at another place, and I’d rather we go there, just in case any complications arise.” 

“Peter… I don’t want to be a burden to you. The school’s insurance will cover this.” 

“Celeste, your recovery will be slow, and I want a good specialist to take care of you. He’s the doctor who treated me when I had that accident, and look at me, I didn’t have any physical sequels, so I want the same for you.” 

“Peter..” Celeste said, her eyes full of tears. 

“Don’t cry! I’ve told you this many times before, and I’ll repeat it again. I’m going to take care of you. You matter to me, and whether we’ve been together for a year or more you’ll walk again, you’ll see.” 

“Is my recovery really going to take that long?” 

“Dr. Mandel told me that for your bone to heal properly, it take at least six months.”
