“Laura,” Fred said gently, “everything seems fine so far. I believe this could just be stress from the change in schools or environment. But I do need to ask you a more delicate, personal question. You’re free to answer or not

“Laura, at what age did your period start?” Fred asked gently. 

“At eleven…” Laura replied softly, her cheeks flushed with embarrassment. 

Maximus’s expression faltered, caught off guard by her response. His little girl had started so early. He didn’t know much about such things, but he remembered how complicated those years had been for Mary. Alexia, on the other hand, had taken a proactive approach, using medications to prepare herself for such changes. With Laura, though, he couldn’t even begin to imagine who might have guided her through it. The thought struck a painful chord deep within him. 

“Laura… Have you had sex?” 

Laura stayed silent for a moment, glancing nervously at her father. Fred immediately understood and stepped in gently. 

“Laura, I know this is embarrassing, and I know your mom isn’t here anymore. But your father is a good man. You shouldn’t feel ashamed. I know it’s complicated, but you need to trust someone, and if not your own father, then who else?” 

Fred had known Maximus as the proud and commanding businessman who once dominated markets. The man sitting before him now was entirely different. While he considered leaving them alone to talk, something told him it wasn’t the right move. His role as a doctor gave him a reason to stay and guide Laura through this difficult 

moment. 

Laura took a deep breath, her chest rising and falling as she gathered her courage. Finally, she exhaled in a long sigh, clenching the hem of her oversized pink sweater tightly in her fists. 

“I’m not a virgin anymore… my boyfriend and 1…” Her voice trailed off. 

Maximus’s hand flew to his mouth as his other hand clenched into a tight fist, his nails digging into his palm. He didn’t need Fred to say anything–the truth was already sinking in. It was a harsh blow, one that every father dreads. 

Laura didn’t want to admit it, but hearing Fred’s questions confirmed her growing fear about what might be happening to her. 

“Laura,” Fred said, his tone serious but calm, “I need to ask you something, and I want you to answer truthfully. Have you and your boyfriend used any form of protection?” 

Laura bowed her head, pulling anxiously at the threads of her sweater. 

“No,” she muttered. 

Maximus was speechless. He couldn’t form words as the reality hit him–his daughter had lost her virginity to a reckless boy who hadn’t even taken basic precautions. Memories of his own youth surged forward, particularly his mistakes with his first wife. Now, karma was coming back to haunt him in the most painful way possible. He didn’t need expertise to see it. 

Without a word, Fred stood and opened a drawer, retrieving a rapid pregnancy test. 

“Laura, I need you to go to the bathroom–it’s right there, he said, pointing to the door. “Please collect a urine sample in this container, then dip the test strip into it. We need to confirm or rule out a possible pregnancy.”
