Maximus said nothing. He didn’t know Adrian, but the speed at which everything had happened spoke volumes about the boy’s character–or lack thereof.
When they returned home, Maximus retreated to his study. He didn’t know how to process the news or who to turn to without exploding. Pulling out his phone, he called the only person he trusted to listen without judgment.
“Hello?”
“Maximus… what’s going on? Why are you calling? Is there an issue with the investors?”
“No, Peter… I just needed to talk to you, brother to brother. Do you have time?”
“Hmm… I’m at the hospital, but if it’s urgent, where do you want to meet?”
“Are you okay? Did something happen to you, your son, your grandson, or Theodore?”
“Maximus, we’re all fine. If you’re distracted, let me remind you–I already told you Celeste is in the hospital. She had an accident at school, which is why I’m here. But everything’s under control. If you want, we can go for a drink… I have something to tell you too. How about we meet at a bar near the hospital? I’ll send you my location, and you can pick me up.‘
“Are you sure it’s okay to leave your girlfriend alone?”
“Yes. She’s about to sleep. Every time they give her the medication, she falls into a deep sleep for at least two hours. That should be enough time.”
“Alright… I guess that works.”
Maximus received Peter’s location and left the house in a hurry. He felt like if he stayed one more minute, he might explode, Twenty minutes later, he sent Peter a message letting him know he was waiting at the hospital’s main entrance. Peter glanced at Celeste, who had just fallen deeply asleep. He kissed her forehead, then left her room without another thought.
At almost the same time, Valerie and Marcus were walking toward the elevator, heading down two floors to the parking garage. Valerie had been discharged but needed to stop on the second floor to see Dr. Hill. Peter, meanwhile, was already in the elevator, absorbed in reading emails that had just come in. He had to admit that the years were catching up with him–he could no longer read small text as clearly. He pulled out his glasses and refocused on his phone.
Distracted by the emails, Peter didn’t notice the two women standing beside him in the elevator. When the doors opened on the second floor, the women stepped out, and he glanced at them out of the corner of his eye, offering a polite smile. As he raised his gaze, he spotted Marcus and Mary approaching Mary saw him instantly, her steps quickening. The elevator doors closed just as she reached it.
Marcus noticed too, but he pretended to be distracted, bending down to adjust his shoelace. His deliberate movements made Valerie turn toward him.
“Marcus, did you see him? Tell me you saw him!” Valerie said anxiously.
“See who? What are you talking about, Valerie?” Marcus asked, feigning confusion,
“It was Peter! It was him!‘

“Valerie, we need to go home. You need to relax. All this stress is making you things that aren’t real. I’m sorry to be blunt, but Peter is dead. He’s been dead for 20 years,” Marcus said firmly.

imagining things. She was Valerie took a deep breath, pretending to calm down, but inside, she knew she w absolutely certain she had seen him again—the same man he had spotted in the school principal’s office.
Peter, on the other hand, was nearly pale as a slicet. The moment the elevator reached the ground floor, he stepped out in large strides, hurrying toward the hospital exit. When he saw Maximus’s car, he practically ran to it and jumped inside.
