Peter circled around Maximus’s car. It was clear he owed him a window now. He was heading to his house to ask Theodore for help taking it to the shop. Besides, there was no way he could return to the room with Celeste in this state. It was past 5:00 a.m., so the best option was to go home, take a bath, and patch himself up. 

Marcus, on the other hand, was walking into the emergency room to get the bruises on his face treated. Showing up at home like this would only alarm Valerie, so he called Frederick. 

“Frederick, are you home?” Marcus asked while driving toward his house. 

“Marcus? Are you okay? Do you need something? What’s going on? You don’t usually call me at this hour unless it’s an emergency,” Frederick said, sitting up abruptly in bed. 

“It’s not an emergency, but I want to come over. Can I? I don’t have anywhere else to go…” 

“Of course! You know my house is always open to you. Did something happen with Valerie?” 

“I’ll explain when I get there.” 

“Alright, see you soon.” 

[Palmer Mansion] 

Peter arrived home, his body aching. His head hurt, but what pained him most was his heart. The frustration his friend had caused him led him to lash out, saying things he had kept bottled up for a long time. 

He knew full well that the confrontation from just a few minutes ago had been inevitable. Both men were in love with the same woman. Their bond of friendship and brotherhood had been strained. Maximus, despite once being involved with Mary, didn’t provoke the same feelings. Peter didn’t know how to describe the odd sensation–or maybe he didn’t want to admit it. He felt betrayed. With memories resurfacing, things now looked different, and that strange, painful feeling consumed him. 

As Peter made his way to his room, Theodore emerged from his own. He noticed how slowly his usually imposing friend was walking, so he stepped in and, seeing him up close, asked: 

“Who won?” 

“Don’t mock me!” 

“Hmm… judging by your answer, it was Marcus.” 

“How do you even know it was a fight? And that it was with Marcus?” 

“Not many people want to smash your face in. And if it had been Maximus, you wouldn’t be walking in like this.” 

“Shut up and help me to my bed!” 

“You’re so stubborn! You should just talk to her and put an end to this chapter of your life. You have a knack for making things complicated with women, and now you’re just adding another layer.” 

“What do you mean by that?” 

“Peter, lately you’ve been acting on impulse. Remember you married Alexia Levett? Then there’s Mary Preston. When are you going to tell her the whole truth? And now there’s Celeste. She’s the only one who makes me happy, but also worries me. That woman is amazing, and I’m so grateful to her. But what are your plans with her? I agreed to her staying here for her recovery, but what’s next? Are you planning to marry her?” 

“Yes!”

“Well, before that, you need to get a divorce. Don’t forget! 

“Ugh, Theodore! Do you enjoy torturing me? That stupid arrangement with Alexia was just to keep her in check. It’s not a real marriage.” 

“Then you need to make that clear to her. Elijah’s been looking for you at the house. He even got the landline number since you apparently blocked him on your mobile. Your ‘wife‘ left a message saying she misses you and needs you.” 

“That wretched woman!” 

“You love complicating your love life. Before, it was waking up in a different house every day. Now you’ve got three women who’d probably skin you alive if they joined forces.” 

“Enough already. Just help me get undressed. My whole body hurts. Do you have any painkillers?” 

“Guess there’s probably something in the first–aid kit, but let me help you first and then I’ll grab them. Want coffee too?” 

“Of course. I’ll take a shower, change, and pack my stuff to head to the hospital.” 

“How are you going to explain that busted lip?” 

“I’ll think of something. Marcus’s still a brute; he knows exactly where to hit so it hurts to your core. Now that I think about it, I wouldn’t want that man as an enemy.” 

“Well, you practically did the same thing to him, don’t you remember?” 

“I wasn’t that ruthless! I was just following orders…” 

“If you say so. But yeah, Marcus has definitely changed because of Mary. Still, back in the day, he scared me. You were more controlled. He was like a demon in human form. 

“Come on, don’t exaggerate. He had his reasons, and they were clear.” 

“You’re still defending your buddy, even after he used you as a punching bag? Have you looked at your body?” 

“These bruises will be gone in a couple of days. The one on my face worries me more, but I’ll figure out what to tell Celeste so she doesn’t stress out.” 

“I hope Marcus walked away with a few bruises himself.” 

“Theodore!” 

“What? It’s true! You both needed this fight. It didn’t solve anything, but at least you got out what was bottled up. Now, hopefully, you two won’t go looking for each other again.”
