Chapter 0526

I’ll never forget you, I promise. But I want to spend the rest of my life with someone. And if life smiles on me with children, I’ll always tell them about you, and I’ll ask you to watch over them. I know you’ll agree that it’s time for me to move forward. It’s been so many years, and think I’ve finally found the right person. Peter is the man I’ve been waiting for. I’m happy with him. The days have been few, but they’ve been so good. Please, watch over me and guide me. I’ll always love you.‘
Speaking from the depths of her heart to the two souls she believed watched over her, Celeste felt lighter. Everything she said was true. She had never known luxury, but she and Adam had worked hard to create a better future. If he hadn’t died, and if their child had been born, they would have been a beautiful family.
But fate had been cruel. Sometimes it seemed like life punished you for sins you didn’t even know you’d committed in another lifetime.
[Marcus’s P.O.V]
Frederick carefully cleaned Marcus’s wounds again, the marks left by Peter’s fists. He understood perfectly well that this fight had been inevitable. Sooner or later, as men, their instincts would have taken over.
“Marcus, take a shower. I left some pajamas on the bed. Get some rest. I’ll prepare the information you asked for. By tonight, you’ll finally go through everything I shared with you in that folder.”
Marcus nodded and headed to the bathroom. His mouth still bore traces of blood. The fight between him and Peter could have easily turned deadly if either of them had truly wanted it. But their past friendship had held them back.
Standing under the stream of water, Marcus let it cascade over his battered body. A faint smirk, almost like a smile, tugged at his lips. If someone had told them, back when they first met, that one day they’d be fighting over a woman, neither of them would have believed it.
After his shower, Marcus slipped into the pajamas Frederick had left for him and stretched out on the bed. It was large and comfortable, offering a reprieve, if only until Frederick returned with the requested documents.
Lying there, a wave of nostalgia washed over him. His wife his beloved Valerie–wasn’t by his side. Closing his eyes, he could almost see her there, but when he opened them again, the space beside him was empty.
The hollow ache of helplessness gnawed at him. He hated how much Peter’s presence had affected her. But what he hated even more was the fact that he knew the truth and couldn’t–or wouldn’t–tell her.
Part of him was still in disbelief. He couldn’t fathom that his wife was so deeply consumed by memories of a past love. After all these years, Marcus had assumed she’d closed that chapter. He knew she couldn’t forget completely, but he hadn’t imagined she would still hold onto it. Yet, it was clear: somewhere deep within her, that love for Peter lingered.
