“Valerie! What are you doing up so early and on your feet? 

“Hi, Emma! I was a little hungry and came for some milk and cake. By the way, Serenity should be having breakfast by now, but I don’t see her. Maybe I should go wake her up.”

“No, sweetheart, don’t worry. Serenity didn’t sleep here last night. I could be wrong, but I think Maximus has some serious trouble at home with his daughter, Laura.” 

“Serenity didn’t sleep here? Trouble? What does that have to do with Serenity?” 

“Laura called her yesterday. She needed someone to talk to and, well, you know… blood calls to blood. Those two girls–despite having different mothers–have found each other and get along wonderfully.” 

Emma’s words momentarily pulled Valerie out of her own troubles. She had been so caught up in herself that she hadn’t noticed her daughter’s connection with Maximus–or, apparently, with his daughter. It wasn’t a bad thing, but it certainly surprised her. 

“Yesterday, after she got home, Serenity received a call from Laura,” Emma said. “Your daughter told us she wanted to ask for permission to go out, but then she didn’t want to bother you. So, she let us know she was going to see her sister. Night fell, and we got worried, so we called her. She said she’d be staying at Maximus’s house because things were a bit… ‘complicated.‘ She didn’t give me any more details.” 

“Oh, that Serenity!” Valerie sighed. “Emma, I feel like I’ve been neglecting my kids. The pregnancy, my hormones, my husband–and now I think I’m losing my mind.” 

“Don’t talk nonsense, child!” 

“Emma, I don’t understand why the hell I keep seeing Peter everywhere. Well, not everywhere, but I’ve seen him twice now, and he looks so real. I’m starting to doubt my sanity. Today, I’m going to look for a psychiatrist or psychologist to help me figure out why I’m seeing dead people. But first, I want to take John to school. After that, I’ll call Serenity to check on her, then I’ll find a psychologist.” 

Emma knew exactly where Valerie’s feelings were coming from. She and Camille had made a pact not to reveal what they knew, but seeing Valerie convinced she was losing her mind filled Emma with guilt. For a moment, she felt tempted to tell her. Yet, Camille’s words echoed in her head: “This isn’t our place to interfere.” 

“Finding a psychologist is a good idea. It might help you with your fears. It’s not good to pass all this stress on to your little ones,” Emma said, gesturing toward Valerie’s belly. 

“You’re right, Emma. I’m going to check on my boy now. I think I’ve had enough cake for the morning.” 

“Go ahead, dear! Talk to John while you’re at it. He’s feeling very guilty. We’ve explained over and over that the accident with his teacher wasn’t his fault, but he doesn’t believe us.” 

“Thank you for telling me, Emma! By the way, do you know where Miss Celeste is hospitalized?” 

“From what I heard, she was at the same hospital as you. According to what Camille mentioned from school gossip, one of the parents is her boyfriend. Apparently, he transferred her to another hospital to ensure she received better care. But to be honest, I’m not entirely sure!? 

“Wow! I wouldn’t have imagined Miss Celeste being so young. I only heard about the accident, but I can’t picture the school allowing that kind of relationship.” 

“Many moms were surprised, too. They say Miss Celeste is very beautiful, and the boyfriend is quite handsome. But I didn’t think it was polite to ask who he is.”
