It was all too clear. The Brown family was seeking revenge, targeting his family. They knew exactly how to strike. Maximus had always known life would catch up to him, but he hadn’t expected it to happen so soon.
One day, Alex and Audrey Brown had shown up at his house ready to deliver shocking news. They came to inform him he would be a father again. But they hadn’t expected Maximus’s response.
[Valeria, Three Months Ago]
“Maximus, what do you have to say about this?” Alex demanded, clearly furious.
“Alex, what do you want me to say? Congratulations, Audrey! But what does this have to do with me?”
“It has everything to do with you! Or do you think that child just appeared by divine intervention?”
“Well, what do you want me to say?”
“Listen, Maximus, I’m barely holding myself back from punching you in the face, and now you’re spouting this nonsense?”
“Let’s calm down for a second. You’re the one who came to my house with your sister, implying that I’m… the father?”
“I’m not implying anything! It’s time you took responsibility for once in your life. The child is yours!”
“Alex, if there’s one thing I’ve always been, it’s responsible. But becoming a father again at this point? Let me tell you, I’d have to be an idiot to be having kids all over the place.”
“You should’ve thought of that before getting involved with my sister.”
Throughout the heated exchange, Audrey stayed silent, afraid her brother and Maximus would start throwing punches. What she didn’t expect was what Maximus, supposedly the father of her child, would say next.
“I understand why you’re upset, and believe me, I’m not proud of having been with your sister. For that, I owe you an apology. I know I was wrong. Audrey is a beautiful, intelligent young woman, and I don’t want to say anything that isn’t true. But I can’t be the father of that baby. If I were, I’d have no problem acknowledging it. However, I must clarify something–when I say I can’t be the father, I mean it literally. I had a vasectomy five years ago when I realized my wife had no intention of stopping at five kids.”
“What the hell are you saying?”
“Yes. I can’t have more children. I already have five, plus two that didn’t make it. Audrey…” Maximus turned to the young woman, who had gone pale at his revelation.
“It’s important that you talk to your brother and be honest about who the father of your child is. Because I can assure you, it’s not me.”
Audrey was at a loss for words. She hadn’t expected the situation to take this turn. Too young and unprepared, she couldn’t come up with a solid excuse. Alex, meanwhile, said, “Audrey, you’d better tell me who the father of your baby is, because the man standing here denies any connection.”
“Alex, he is the father. I haven’t been with anyone else…”
“Audrey, do you really think I’m that stupid?”
“What?”
“I’ve been deceived before–by my wife, no less. Do you think I’d need to lie about this? Tell your brother the
