Chapter 0582
Chapter 0582
Valerie and Camille, after chatting for a while in the bedroom, headed to the dining room. Serenity and John were already there, quietly having breakfast. Little John had woken up early, eager to see his dad, but when he saw Valerie enter the dining room with only Camille, his expression turned sad.
“What’s wrong, John?” Valerie asked, noticing her son’s reaction.
“Where’s Dad?” John said, lowering his head.
The question struck Valerie like a dagger to the heart. She didn’t have an answer. She was about to tell him the truth when Serenity interrupted.
“John, Dad went on a trip… He’s been really busy with work and had to leave last night. Remember? You saw leave with a suitcase,” Serenity said confidently.
“Yeah, but I thought he’d be back by now…”
“John, come on. He had to travel far,” Serenity added matter–of–factly.
Valerie approached John, placed her hand on his shoulder, stroked his hair, and kissed the top of his head.
“Your sister’s right. Dad went on a trip, and as soon as he can, he’ll call you.”

Serenity watched Valerie closely. She wasn’t sure what to feel. Yesterday, while walking down the hall, she had overheard the argument between Marcus and her mother. It had all been about Peter. It was clear that he had decided to reappear, but not in a way she’d ever imagined. Still, she found herself thinking, “What did you expect? That everyone would be happy about it?”
Serenity felt a mix of emotions: anger at Peter, at her mom, and even at her dad. But only they could understand their reasons. As much as she wanted to judge them, she wasn’t in a position to do so. When everything had happened, she hadn’t even been born, and on top of that, it was something her parents needed to resolve on their own. After coming to this conclusion, her mother moved closer to greet her, but Serenity stood up abruptly and picked up her plate, leaving Valerie standing there.
“Hi, Mom! Sorry, but I have to go. It’s super late, and I’m going to be late for my first class. Oh, by the way, I’m stopping by to see Laura. She wasn’t feeling well yesterday and ended up in the hospital,” Serenity said as she left the dining room.
“Hey, young lady, greet your mother properly!” Camille called out, watching her leave. “Don’t you know your mom wasn’t feeling well yesterday either?”
Serenity paused and turned to face the three women watching her.
“Camille, my mom is fine. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have discharged her,” Serenity replied, trying to keep her irritation in check.
Serenity didn’t mean to hurt her mother’s feelings, but at that moment, she didn’t want to be around her. She wasn’t naive–she understood what was going on, even though she tried to remain neutral. She couldn’t fathom why her mother would waver over an old flame. Marcus wasn’t her biological father, but he deserved her respect. He didn’t deserve to be compared to or replaced by someone from the past. These were her thoughts, and she fought hard to keep them to herself.
Camille, noticing Serenity’s tone and expression, wanted to respond, but Valerie gently took her arm and shook her head, signaling her to let it go. Meanwhile, John remained oblivious to the tension, focused on his bowl of cereal.
“Mom, when is Dad coming back?”
Chapter 0582
“Yeah, Mom, when?” Serenity chimed in, giving Camille apointed look.
“I don’t know yet, John. I hope to speak with him soon, and as soon as I know, I’ll tell you.”
“Hmmm… That’s strange. Dad never leaves without tellingine. And you always know when he’s coming back.”
“This time, I don’t, John.”
“Well, if there’s nothing else, ladies, I’m off. I’m going to be super late for school,” Serenity said, turning on her heel and heading for the door.
