Alden arrived at the school with Ethan, who was still teary–eyed and visibly upset. Lately, his grandfather had been the one taking him to school, and Ethan had grown used to their routine. Alden, who didn’t follow the same rhythm, had inadvertently thrown the boy off, leading to a tantrum. Alden’s patience wore thin, and he ended up scolding Ethan, forcing him into the car, where the boy cried for most of the drive. 

When they arrived, Alden parked the car and helped Ethan out. The boy’s face still bore the marks of his tears, and his irritation hadn’t subsided. 

“Ethan, I know it’s hard that your grandfather isn’t here, but you promised to be a good boy. Help me out with that, okay? I’m not Grandpa, but I’m doing my best,” Alden said gently. 

“Tell Grandpa Theodore to pick me up this afternoon. I prefer him over someone who just scolds me,” Ethan muttered, grabbing his backpack and walking into the school without looking back. 

Alden felt a sharp pang in his chest. It was only the first day without his father, and things were already falling apart. Despite Peter’s reserved nature, his bond with Ethan was undeniable. It made sense–Peter had been there for the boy since birth, even more so than Alma, who lacked the same connection. 

After standing outside the car for a moment, Alden climbed into his sleek vehicle and headed toward his uncle Maximus’s house. He wasn’t sure what the meeting was about, but if Maximus had called, it had to be important. After all, Maximus was mostly detached from the company these days, aside from the monthly deposits made to his children’s accounts. 

[At Maximus’s house] 

“Laura, sweetheart, how are you feeling?” Matthew asked as he entered her room carrying a tray of breakfast food. 

“I’m fine, Matthew. Really. Where’s my dad?” 

“I sent him to take a shower and rest for a bit. I’ll take care of you for now. You need to understand your dad’s exhausted. If he gets sick, he won’t be of any use to anyone. Just let him sleep and regain his strength–he’ll come back to check on you. In the meantime, I’ve made all your childhood favorites. Remember?” 

“Yes!” Laura said, smiling as she looked at the tray. 

“Good. Now eat up, and I’ll go check on your dad.” 

Maximus was in the shower, his mind spinning after learning that Diana was back in Valentia. He couldn’t deny it he was itching to see her. In a moment like this, when his life was in turmoil, seeing her would be a relief, just like the sound of her voice had been years ago when his world was in chaos. 

After finishing his shower, Maximus changed into comfortable clothes and prepared to get some much–needed rest. Just as he was settling in, the doorbell rang. The butler answered and informed Matthew. 

“Sir, Miss Serenity is here to see her sister.” 

“Let her in. This is her home–she can come and go as she leases.” 

“Very well, sir.” 

Serenity made her way to Laura’s room and saw her bed filled with the snacks Matthew had kindly prepared. 

“Wow, someone’s getting spoiled,” Serenity teased. 

“Hi, Serenity! Matthew brought these. When I was a kid, he always made me these snacks when I was feeling down. He thought today I needed to feel like a kid again,” Laura said with a smile.

“Well, it looks like Matthew really knows you,” Serenity replied. 

“He does. My parents were always caught up in their lives and problems, so they didn’t have much time for me. When Matthew came over, he hated seeing me sad, so he made me snacks. He called it our little secret,” 

“It’s good you had someone you could count on,” Serenity said thoughtfully. 

“Matthew is more of a grandfather to me than my actual grandfather.” 

Serenity shuddered, recalling the day she had met their Infamous grandfather. 

“Anyway, I’m glad you came to see me!” Laura said, changing the subject. 

“I was worried about you and wanted to check in. I texted Maximus, and he said you’d just gotten out of the hospital.”
