The three of them left Laura’s room, with Maximus carrying his daughter in his arms and Serenity walking a few steps behind. Serenity felt a bit out of place in the house that had once belonged to her biological father. As for Maximus, having Serenity there gave him a strange sense of unease. He had never imagined her walking through the halls of what had once been her mother’s home. Even when he learned she was his daughter, he never thought they would have any kind of relationship. It seemed the bond of sisterhood between Serenity and Laura was stronger than he had anticipated, and for that, he was deeply grateful to Laura. 

Alden was already in the dining room, scrolling through his phone. He looked up when Maximus entered, followed by Serenity. 

“Maximus, is that Serenity? She’s your daughter with Mary, right?” Alden asked as Maximus gently set Laura down on a chair. 

“That’s right,” Maximus said, sitting beside her… 

“I could never forget such a beautiful face,” Alden said, his gaze lingering on Serenity.

much, but thank you,” Serenity replied trying to hide her discomfort with a polite smile. 

Alden’s intense attention made Serenity uneasy. ‘He’s my cousin, for heaven’s sake!‘ she reminded herself, but his piercing eyes made her feel clumsy and awkward–feelings she wasn’t accustomed to, even with boys who had tried to flirt with her before. 

“How’s Peter?” Serenity asked, breaking the awkward silence. 

“Serenity, sit here,” Maximus said, pointing to the chair directly across from Alden. “That way, we’re not so spread out. The boys should be down any minute now.” 

“He’s fine. He left on a trip, and I have no idea when he’ll be back,” Alden replied, his tone serious. 

“How did Ethan take it?” Maximus asked as he sat down. “know your son is very attached to your father.” 

“It didn’t go well,” Alden admitted, looking frustrated. “My son hates me. He doesn’t like how I get him ready for school. My father had a routine for him, and I didn’t follow it. It made for a rough morning.” 

“Kids don’t like it when their routines are disrupted. Maybe you could ask him what he wants–he’d probably explain it to you,” Serenity said confidently. 

“Oh, really? And how do you know that?” Alden asked, his curiosity piqued. 

“Well, I have a brother the same age as your son. It so happens that they’re friends,” Serenity said, meeting his gaze steadily. 

“I didn’t know that,” Alden said, his expression softening. My father has taken care of my son since he was a baby. Now that he’s away, I’ve been blindsided by a lot of things.” 

“Seems like being alone is a Palmer specialty,” Maximus interjected, trying to lighten the mood. 

“Maybe we’re just terrible husbands who prefer solitude,” lden said with a hint of bitterness. 

“I’ll be a mom and end up alone too!” Laura chimed in sadly. “It’s not just the Palmer men; us women aren’t any luckier in love.” 

“Laura, sweetheart, it’s not your fault,” Maximus said gently. “I’ve already told you–the young man you fell for isn’t a good person. It’s better to have someone like him out of your life.” 

Maximus’s voice was calm, but his words carried weight. He knew that the “him” he was referring to was
