Chapter 0588
Maximus eventually appeared, carrying Maurice in his arms, with Paul walking beside him. Both boys looked sheepish, but their expressions quickly changed to that of ravenous dinosaurs upon seeing the food on the table. Without a word or greeting, they dove into their plates.
“See, kids? The food’s delicious,” Matthew said, glancing at them. “Where were you two?”
“Watching TV… You were right,” Maximus said, crossing his arms. “Now then, don’t you think you should say hello? Alden and Serenity are here.”
“Hi, Alden,” they both said without looking up from their plates.
“And Serenity?” Maximus asked, raising an eyebrow.
“She’s family–she doesn’t count,” Maurice said casually, mouth half–full.
Serenity felt a strange mix of emotions. She hadn’t expected her brothers to view her that way, but it gave her an unexpected sense of belonging. It felt good, though a pang of guilt lingered. Things at home were a mess, yet here, she felt comfortable, as if she wanted to escape from her own reality.
A while later, Alden and Serenity left Maximus’s house. Ever the gentleman, Alden opened the door of his luxurious car for her before slipping into the driver’s seat himself. Putting on his sunglasses, he started the and turned to her.
Serenity, where would you! studying her curiously.
me to take you? Do you want to go to the university or back home?” Alden asked,
Serenity hesitated for a moment before answering, “To the university–no, wait. My classes are over. Honestly, I didn’t want to say this in front of Maximus, but I was worried about Laura and decided to spend the day with her instead. To be completely honest, I don’t feel like going home. I don’t really have anywhere specific to go.”
“Perfect! Then let’s take the opportunity to get to know each other. I didn’t go to the office today, and like you, I’m not eager to go home. My son is upset with me, and I don’t want to make things worse. I know it sounds like an excuse, but I’m just trying to avoid more conflict,” Alder said, a hint of concern in his voice.
“Where’s Peter?” Serenity asked, changing the subject.
“My father went back to Slovenia. He’s with Celeste, his girlfriend.”
“Peter has a girlfriend?” Serenity asked, surprised.
“Yes. They’d just started dating, but after the accident where he saved Ethan and your brother, Celeste now requires a lot of care. My father took her with him to look after her. In the five years I’ve lived with him, this is the first time I’ve seen him act like this. I never imagined he’d want a relationship. Since your mother, he hasn’t been with anyone.”
“Well, my house is a disaster,” Serenity admitted. “Apparently, Peter showed up at my house, and now my mom is confused. It’s caused a lot of fights between her and my dad. Last night, my dad left with a suitcase, and this morning John asked where he was… We didn’t know what to say, so we told him Dad was on a trip.”
“Now I get it,” Alden said thoughtfully.
“Get what?” Serenity asked.
“My father always said he didn’t want to see your mother because his mere presence would change too much. Now I see what he meant. Peter isn’t a bad person, Serenity. He’s a good father–strict and tough, but kind at heart.”

“I know,” Serenity said. “I got to talk to him briefly before all of this came out, and I didn’t feel like he wanted to hurt my family.”
