“Marcus, have you already given her permission?”

“No. I told her she needed to discuss it with you. The last thing I want is for you to come home one day and find her gone. And she still needs to talk to Maximus. From what I understand, this is just something she’s decided on her own neither we nor Maximus knew anything about until now.” 

“Why does she want to leave?”

“I already told you–she thinks her sister needs another wanan’s support during her pregnancy.” 

“I think she just wants to run away from us…” 

“We need to be honest with ourselves–there’s some truthan that. We haven’t exactly been the best parents lately. It broke my heart to think of her leaving home, and even worse, that she might end up at her biological father’s house. But I don’t have the right to ask her to stay. All I can do is respect her decision. And as for John, don’t worry. I promise I’ll take care of him. I know I haven‘ been the best father these past weeks, but I’ll pick him up from school every day, help him with his homework, and bring him home. I’ll be there for him.” 

“I’m sorry for everything that’s happening, Marcus,” Valerie said, her eyes brimming with tears. 

“There’s nothing to apologize for. These things were bound to happen eventually. I’ve been a terrible partner, leaving you with all the responsibility for the kids. That has to stop. Even if we’re separated, they’re still my children too. I promise I’ll be there for them–and for you. We may not be together, but I can see you’re struggling. You’ve had too much to handle on your own. Even if we’re apart, I want you to know that I love you. And because of that, I thought giving us space was the best thing to do. But I can’t let you carry all of this alone.” 

“Marcus… I didn’t want to separate from you,” Valerie admitted, her voice breaking. “But seeing Peter again many emotions, and I didn’t know how to handle them. I know I’ve hurt you, and it was never 

my

intention.” 

Marcus knelt in front of her, meeting her tearful gaze as she sat. He pulled her into a gentle hug and kissed her forehead. 

“Valerie, we need this space. We need to figure out what we both want. But in the meantime, you’re not alone. I won’t abandon my kids, and if Serenity has made up her mind, we can’t stop her. What we can do is show her that we respect her decision and that she has our support–both of us.” He gestured from himself to Valerie, emphasizing unity. 

“My little girl is leaving me…” Valerie sobbed, letting the tears flow freely. 

“Think about it this way–at least she’s leaving for her father. It’s not like she’s come home with a future husband! Maybe she’s even remembering what I told her as a teenager.” 

“What did you tell her?” 

“That I’d be thrilled if she decided to become a nun. 

“Marcus!” Valerie exclaimed, bursting into laughter through her tears. 

And in that moment, Valerie remembered why she had loved him so much. Marcus always found a way to bring light to even the darkest situations. He was wise, thoughtful, and faced life head–on. He never ran away. When had she forgotten that? When had she let a memory of someone else cloud her judgment? She couldn’t find the answer. Peter’s presence had muddled her reasoning, but now, she realized something wasn’t right about that. 

“Come on, stop crying.” Marcus said, helping her up. “I’ll take you home. Since I missed the appointment, I can at least drive you back. Did they give you a copy of the ultrasound?”
