While Maximus traveled back from Germany, in Switzerland, Lucius was grappling with the only choice his mother was giving him. He refused, but every day she reminded him that she wasn’t well and that it would be better if he let her go. 

“Lucius, think carefully about what you’re doing, son… You’re throwing your money away. I’m never going to get better. Let me go I’ve made my decision.” 

“That’s not your decision to make! Damn it!” Lucius yelled, frustrated. 

“It is! I lived a good life, son. I got to see you grow up, to watch your siblings and Laura. I know I wasn’t a good mother, but I always knew that at any moment, my father of Leonardo would take you away from me. I never wanted to get attached to you. I preferred to act like you didn’t exist and this is my punishment.” 

“Mom! I already told you–you’re not going to die! I don’t care. Even if I have to beg Maximus for help, I’ll never let you die. Do you understand?” 

“Lucius… there’s something I’ve never told you,” Alexia said, her eyes filled with tears. 

“Mom… I told you I don’t like it when you cry. I hate seeing those beautiful eyes like that.” 

“Lucius, I want you to know the truth… the truth about your story. 

“What are you talking about?” 

“Lucius, I have no excuse. I was immature, irrational, and always spoiled by your grandparents. I thought I owned the world.”

“What things?” Lucius asked. 

“Lucius, he… he made me a woman. At that stupid age, you believe everything. I became infatuated with him. I have to admit, Maximus was my cover for everything. He was sweet, wanted a serious relationship, something formal. But I let myself be swept away by Gabriel. I became obsessed with him–I even followed him to Paris, leaving Maximus behind in Valentia.” 

“Did my grandparents never notice?” 

No! I wish they had… because just to be with him, before going to Paris, I started going to parties that weren’t meant for girls my age. A lot of things happened, and I felt like a woman, even though I was only seventeen. Too late, I realized Gabriel only wanted me for money and to have a young girl at his side…”

“When I found out he was married, I thought he’d leave his wife. But the bastard told me he wouldn’t. He said he had a family and wouldn’t change that for me. I wanted to turn back, but too much time had passed. I was good at my job, but the fact that he left me made it impossible to stay. So, I went back to Valentia.
