Maximus had returned from Germany, but his life had changed after that trip. The man came back with more questions than answers, and the only one who could provide those answers was in Slovenia. 

“Peter… you son of a bitch. Why the hell do I have to follow through with your stupid plan?” Maximus said aloud. Naturally, no one responded. He was taking a sip of whiskey when someone knocked on the door to his study. “Maximus?” came a woman’s voice. 

“Come in!” Maximus said, turning his chair toward the door. 

Serenity entered, walking slowly, her gaze curiously taking in every detail of the room. Maximus looked at her, feeling a sudden wave of warmth as he watched his daughter study the space–a place he had often refused to share with her mother. 

“What is it, Serenity? How have you been feeling these past few days here?” 

“That’s exactly what I want to talk to you about…” 

“Go ahead. I’m listening.” 

“I came here to take care of Laura and the kids. I plan to stay for a while, as I mentioned. I hope that doesn’t bother you…

“Why would it bother me?” 

“I know that you and I haven’t really connected much, and most of what we’ve done together has been because of Laura. I want to get to know you. I want to take advantage of being here to spend time with you. 

A strange sense of nostalgia washed over him. His daughter the child he had with a love that ultimately failed- was choosing to reach out to him. 

“I don’t see any problem with that. What do you want to know?” 

“I want you to teach me.” 

“Teach you? How?” 

“Yes. Marcus has taught me a lot about business and how to run a company, but I want to use this time to learn from you, too. I know you’ve been teaching Alden some things, so I want the same.” 

Maximus studied her with suspicion before asking, “Serenity, aren’t you still in school? If I remember correctly, you’re in university, right? If Marcus isn’t paying for your tuition because you came here, Lean take care of it. Because now that I think about it, you haven’t been going. You’ve been here for two weeks, and I haven’t seen you leave for university once. What are you hiding, Serenity 

“I dropped out,” Serenity said calmly. 

“What? Why?” Maximus asked, stunned. 

Are you going to teach me or not?” Serenity shot back, looking him straight in the eye. 

There was no denying it–Serenity had inherited that piercing gaze from Maximus, the same look he reserved for his adversaries in the business world. Maximus ran his hands through his hair and said, “I haven’t seen Marcus yet, but when I do, he’s going to want to punch me in the face, isn’t he?” 

“No, he has no reason to be upset. He already knows I dropped out of university. Are you going to teach me, or should I ask Matthew instead?”

“Damn it, girl! Do you realize you’re supposed to finish your degree?” 

“You’re angrier about this than Marcus. And trust me, my father-” 

Serenity paused as she saw Maximus’s expression shift. She knew exactly how to manipulate both Marcus, the man who raised her, and Maximus, her biological father. 

“Serenity… I’ll teach you. But you need to promise–or better yet, I’ll make you sign an agreement–committing to finishing your studies. You can’t just drop out like this. You’re a Palmer, and you need to carry that name with pride.” 

“Maximus, but I don’t even have your last name…” 

“Then change it, simple as that. But you are going back to university. End of discussion.” 

“Maximus!” Serenity said, her tone frustrated. 

“You don’t have a choice. You go back to university, and I’ll teach you. Otherwise, forget it–you’re not going to blackmail me into this.” 

“I thought you’d help me…” Serenity said, her eyes filling with sadness. 

“Serenity… I’ll teach you, but I don’t want you to drop out of university. That’s a crucial part of your personal and professional growth. You’re an incredibly sharp young woman, but I don’t want you to waste your potential.” “Why does this matter so much to you?” 

“Why? Because I never gave your mother that chance. I don’t want to be the reason you don’t finish 

your education. I don’t want you to put your life on hold to take care of Laura or the kids. I know I’m not the best father, but I can handle things. I don’t want you to sacrifice your future for them. They’ll grow up and figure out their own paths, just like you will. You’re intelligent, and I know Marcus did a great job raising you. But I bet he’s worried about the choices you’ve been making lately.” 

“I talked to him before coming here. He completely understands my reasons. Besides, I’m not quitting university -I’m just taking a break. I want to learn from you. But if you can’t do it, I’ll ask Matthew to teach me. After all, isn’t he the one who taught you everything you know?” 

Maximus froze. Serenity had hit the nail on the head. While his father had trained him for the business world in his youth, the truth was that Matthew had been his constant mentor ever since Leonardo had gone into ” retirement.” At the time, Maximus had resented his father for not teaching him more, but now, knowing the truth, he was grateful. He didn’t owe anything to the man he had recently learned wasn’t his real father. 

Maximus had returned from Germany with a mission. He wasn’t sure if he was ready to approach his biological father, but he had invited him to Valentia to meet his grandchildren. Magnus hadn’t shown any interest in reconnecting, so for now, the idea of a close relationship was off the table.
