“Serenity, at the office, I’m not your dad–I’m the boss,” Maximus said, frowning slightly as he downed his coffee in one gulp. 

“I know, Maximus! Now let’s get going, or I’ll be late for my first day as your assistant.” 

“Miss Bartz, today is your induction day. No one starts working without completing it.” 

“Hmm… I didn’t know that.” 

“Well, now you do. I asked Alden to come to the company. He knows the place better than the HR team. Trust me, he’ll give you the best tour.” 

“Alden?” 

“Yes, my dear. Alden Palmer.” 

“And you?” 

“I have to take a trip today, but I’ll be back in the afternoon 

“Where are you going?” 

Maximus felt as though he was being interrogated. It was strange–only Alexia had ever questioned him like this, and it had been months since he’d experienced it. 

“I’m going to see Peter–your other father.” 

“Peter? Why?” 

“Work matters. He and I have things to resolve. It’s a same–day trip–I’ll be back tonight. 

“Wow, I thought you had nothing to do with Peter anymore. 

“We share a business. A long time ago, when we were young. Your mother might remember–we couldn’t spend a minute together without trying to kill each other. But over time, that changed. Honestly, it’s probably the only good thing to come out of everything that happened.” 

When they arrived at the company parking lot, Matthew was already waiting for them. 

Maximus nodded at Matthew as they walked through the company’s marble–floored lobby. 

“Maximus, your flight leaves in an hour and a half. You need to head to the airport soon,” Matthew reminded him. 

“Is Alden here yet?” 

“Yes, he’s waiting in your office.” 

“Good. Matthew, starting today, Serenity will be working with us. I want Alden to give her the tour and explain what we do. He’s the best person for the job.” 

“Maximus… you’re not staying at the company today?” 

“I’m 

sorry, sweetheart,” Maximus said, turning to Serenity, who was walking beside him. “But I need to head to the airport. Even if I were here, today would’ve been mostly about your orientation. Don’t worry, though. Tomorrow, you’ll be stuck with me, and the real fun–or torture–will begin.” He chuckled, trying to lighten the mood. “Let’s head to my office now. Matthew, can you help with the HR paperwork?” 

“Of course! Though honestly, I could’ve given her the tour myself…” Matthew said, a little puzzled. 

Chapter 0626 

Matthew was surprised for two reasons. First, Serenity, Maximus’s daughter with Mary, was now going to be his right hand. And second, why was Alden the one giving her the tour? 

“Matthew, I need you to go through this,” Maximus said, handing him a folder. “I need your help brainstorming a solution. Trust me, it’ll take time to go over everything.” 

“Is it the same issue we discussed last month?” 

“Exactly.” 

“Fine. Let me see what we can come up 

with.‘
