Maximus’s eyes widened in shock. All his children were at home. That bastard Leonardo had planned everything meticulously, waiting for Maximus to leave the country to put his scheme into action. 

“Leonardo! Don’t you dare touch a hair on my daughter! You’re a monster!” 

“Who’s going to stop me? Matthew? Look around, Maximus. Matthew isn’t here anymore. Didn’t you notice when he disappeared? Truth is, I regret that he chose the wrong side. He was a valuable asset… but too bad, he got sentimental and stayed loyal to you.” 

Leonardo stepped closer to Maximus, holding out his phone. On the screen was a photo that made Maximus’s knees buckle. His eyes filled with tears as he looked at it. 

“You’re a monster! How could you? Why, Leonardo? Why? Maximus cried, his voice cracking with rage and 

sorrow. 

“I told you, Matthew chose the wrong side. He had one last chance this morning, but he decided to remain your servant. Now, if you don’t want the same thing to happen to your daughter, sign the damn paper.” 

“What is this?” Maximus shouted. 

“This document formally acknowledges that you are not my son and relinquishes your claim to the Palmer name, leaving everything–everything–in my hands. The entire Palmer empire is mine. Marcus’s in prison; he’ll never be able to claim a cent. Mary… well, Catherine never managed to formalize her decisions with a judge, so nothing belongs to her. And you, Maximus, you aren’t of my blood. 

“Bastard! You killed Matthew just for that?!” 

“I needed to give you a push. And I had to show you that you don’t mess with me, Maximus. Now, if you want to see your children again, sign it. Right there, next to your name–without a last name.” 

“You’re trash!” Maximus shouted, his fury boiling over. 

A fist collided with his stomach, knocking the wind out of him. Blood spilled from his mouth as he dropped to his knees again. 

“Filth? Of course I am, Maximus. But you know what? I’m disgustingly rich. I gave my best years to this company. I dedicated my life to it. And what did Catherine do? She wanted to give it all away! My poor mother… at the end of her days, she fell in love. Imagine that–falling in love at her age. That’s why she had a guilty conseterice. She tried to make amends, claiming she saved Marcus out of gullt. She knew they were going to kill the entire Bartz family, and she could’ve stopped it, but she didn’t. 

“And do you know why they were targeted? It wasn’t because of Frank Bartz’s debts, as everyone says. No, that’s just nonsense. The truth is, Lawrence Bartz–Marcus’s father–discovered that his brother had dragged the family into the same mess as several others. One day, Lawrence threatened Frank Levett, saying he’d expose everything. And that, Maximus, was his downfall. Not debts, not politics–just that. Lawrence was the architect of his family’s ruin.” 

“All he wanted was to do the right thing,” Maximus said, trembling with anger. “And what happened to him and his family was horrible. Marcus had every right to destroy those thugs.”
