After Catherine took Mary away from Maximus’s mansion, time continued its relentless march forward. Alexia was proving to be exceptional in many ways, outshining several of her colleagues at the office. This didn’t go unnoticed by her lover, who only briefly felt the absence of Mary at home.
News of Alexia Levett being the current partner of the president of Palmer Group quickly became a hot topic in social circles. They were a couple admired by many–both the same age, working together side by side, hand in hand. It was also the first time the company’s president had been seen with a woman, and not just any woman–she was exquisite and distinguished.
Society pages described them as a dream couple, predicting a wedding in the near future. They were frequently spotted leaving luxurious restaurants, cozy cafés, or attending movie premieres, looking like an ordinary, happy couple.
The media loved capturing photos of them walking hand in hand through the park, sitting on benches, or embracing and kissing. The financial world became a point of interest for women who dreamed of finding their own “Prince Charming.” Young women idolized Alexia, using her as a role model for their careers, aspiring to one day meet someone like Maximus Palmer.
Time flew by, and eight months passed quickly. Maximus almost never stayed at his mansion anymore. Since Mary’s departure, he had spent only a few days there. Emma, the housekeeper, found herself alone in the vast estate. She had worked there for years, so in Maximus’s absence, she devoted herself to maintaining the garden that Mary had once tended so lovingly.
Emma remembered that weeks after Mary left, workers had arrived to install garlands, a koi pond, benches, and additional lights to illuminate the garden at night. But none of it had been enjoyed. If Mary could see it, she’d be thrilled, her eyes lighting up. Now, Emma wondered if the garden would even exist after her boss married Alexia.
One night, as Maximus slept beside Alexia, he woke up drenched in sweat, startled by a nightmare. He got up, went to the kitchen, poured himself a glass of water, and drank it all. The dream had felt so real He walked over to the large window overlooking the illuminated city and tried to recall it. Only fragments came back to him–Maximus hitting a woman, a faceless figure sobbing and begging. It didn’t feel real, but the discomfort lingered. Then he saw his grandmother’s disapproving expression in his mind, her voice full of frustration: “Beauty doesn’t grow in hell, Maximus. This is what you deserve for all the harm you’ve caused.”
“My love? What’s wrong?” Alexia asked, approaching him at the window.
“Nothing, sweetheart. I just got thirsty and came to get some water,” Maximus replied with a smile, pulling her into a hug.
“Let’s go back to bed. We need to be up in a couple of hours for the meeting with Luminare. We should
rest.”
“Rest? Who said anything about resting?”
Maximus was a gentleman with Alexia in public, but in private, he was intense, letting his passion for her take over. Nights with her were rarely peaceful–they were always filled with intensity. Alexia knew exactly how to make him lose himself in pleasure. And for her part, she had no complaints; Maximus was thrilling, knowing exactly how to treat a woman in bed. Together, they were the perfect match, both
in public and in private.

“Matthew, when is the company’s anniversary party scheduled?” Maximus asked one morning
“In exactly a month, sir,” Matthew replied confidently “But something has piqued my curiosity.”
“Go on.”
“Mrs. Catherine called and asked me to send an extra invitation, addressed to an ‘Angela Palmer.‘ Apparently, she’s a cousin. I’ve never heard of her before. Should I add her to the guest list?”
“I suppose I don’t have a choice. And no, I’ve never heard of her either.”
“Mrs. Catherine wants her seated next to Mr. Peter.”
“She wants her at our table? That’s reserved for immediate family. She hasn’t even mentioned Mary, but now she’s inviting a stranger? I need you to find out everything about this Angela Palmer.”
“Yes, sir.”
“By the way, have you heard anything about Mary?”
“Just the last update I gave you. She went with your brother to Galea, and after that, all traces disappeared.”
“Wow. The old woman really made her vanish.”
now
“That’s all the man shadowing your brother could gather. We never went deeper into the investigation or hired a detective. You only asked for a surface–level inquiry. Should we double our efforts and locate her?”
