Dr. Hill visited Mary  

at the hospital, and her reaction was one of complete astonishment. The young woman she had met 20 years ago looked almost unchanged. Back then, she had seen her as a poor, abandoned girl. 

Sadly, even now, nothing seemed to have changed. Mary’s face still bore the same sadness and loneliness she had carried all those years ago. 

“Hello, Mary Preston… It’s been such a long time!” 

“Dr. Hill…” 

“I see you go by Valerie Bartz now. Is that your husband’s surname?” 

“Yes…” 

“It’s been so many years since I last saw you.” 

“Twenty years, to be exact…” 

“Well, Mary, I think it’s finally time… Time to heal.” 

After a warm conversation, during which the doctor gathered as much information as possible and made a thorough assessment, it was clear that Valerie needed to be admitted to a psychiatric hospital immediately. 

Her mental state was far from encouraging. She was visibly exhausted and emotionally drained. This decision was relayed to Camille and Frederick, who, despite their reservations, had no choice but to agree. 

For a moment, the idea of bringing her children back to support Valerie’s recovery crossed their minds. However, Maximus intervened with a clear head, forbidding it. He knew his father better than anyone, and he was certain that if Serenity set foot in the country, Marcus would find a way to take her. 

With that settled, Valerie–after a thorough evaluation by Dr. Baker–agreed to her own hospitalization. Meanwhile, her newborn twins remained in the hospital for another week under observation.

Maximus had recently discovered that Peter had visited Mary, and it left him stunned. Initially, Peter had refused any contact with her, so this sudden change baffled him. 

“Peter…” 

“Yes?” 

“I know you went to see Mary.” 

“So?” 

“Why? If I can ask…‘ 

“No.” 

“No what?” 

“No, you can’t ask.” 

“Peter, you’re worrying me!” 

“Why?”

“How can you ask that? Just a few months ago, you didn’t want to see her, and now you seem upset that I found out. Tell me something–have your thoughts about her changed?” 

“What are you getting at?” 

“Don’t play dumb, Peter. I care about Mary too. I’ve seen her, and I don’t deny it. Diana knows about it, but you… What does Celeste think about you moving heaven and earth for an old flame?” 

“Celeste doesn’t need to know. Mary is my past, and Celeste is my present.‘ 

“Peter, don’t fool yourself. I’ve played with fire before, and you know how that ended. I’ll ask again–have your thoughts about Mary changed?” 

“Stop saying ridiculous things. Celeste is my present. 

“Every time you say that, it feels like you’re trying to convince yourself. Now that Mary is under Dr. Hill’s care, do everyone a favor and stay away from her. Let the doctor do her job, and don’t confuse Mary even more.” 

“Are you going to stop me from seeing her?” 

“If I have to, for your sake, yes.”
