Chapter 0689
Chapter 0689
‘You don’t even remember, do you?” Maximus said softly, realization dawning on him. Peter’s blank stare was all the confirmation he needed.
It was painfully clear to Maximus that his brother’s fractured memories and deteriorating health were dragging him deeper into chaos, Maximus resolved that he wouldn’t let Peter face this alone, no matter what it took.
“Maximus… I would never give Alexia away! You know that perfectly well.”
“Why?”
“That woman is already living her own hell! Why would you want to add another one to it?”
“She’s the reason you’re like this!”
“As much as I’d love to agree with you, the truth is, she’s not.”
“Peter, what the hell are you talking about?”
“Do you really think that, with Frank’s history, he’d let himself be pushed around by a woman?”
“Well… She… She was his granddaughter…”
“Sure, but if that’s what he wanted, he wouldn’t have handed her over to Leonardo on a silver platter in the first place. Don’t you think?”
“Are you defending her?”
“No! Of course not!”
“Then what?”
“Frank Levett is the one who ordered my death–not Alexia He sent the hit because what they’re saying in the media is true. Marcus and I… we’re killers. Everything I wrote in the investigation is true. I’m no saint, Maximus. You have no idea how much I enjoyed my work. Those men were scum, ruining the country, and Marcus paid me well for every single one I took out…”
“Peter… Please, stop…” Maximus said, clenching his fists.
Maximus stared at the man lying on that bed, unable to believe that his hands were stained with so much blood. In his mind, all he could see were images of Peter holding his grandson and smiling, or Peter with Mary in the past. That was the brother he knew.
The man being painted before him now had nothing in common with the one he thought he knew.
“Maximus… I know it’s hard for you to accept that your brother is a thug, but that’s what I did in my youth. Everything else was just a front–a very profitable one, sure–but not my main source of income.”
“Damn Marcus!” Maximus snarled, his fists trembling.
“Don’t put all the blame on him. It’s not like he held a gun to my head. Marcus offered me a job, and I accepted. My job was to clear the path for him, and I did it. I knew exactly what I was getting into. Even Catherine suspected. I used to joke about it, but she avoided asking me questions. She never found out who I was really working for.”
“Peter…”
“Maximus, do you know why I clung so tightly to Mary when Catherine left her with me? Do you know why it hurt so much when you took her away?”
