Chapter 0740
Valerie cried for several minutes. It was painful for her to admit that, all this time, she’d carried guilt–a guilt rooted in her past with Peter. He had been an honest man in the end, but Valerie’s heart was too wounded. She hadn’t been able to love him the way he wanted.
After his death, she lived with that guilt, a guilt tied to memories of a man who had done everything he could to make her happy. Even though Maximus hadn’t been the best person to her, Valerie clung to the familiarity he represented: mistreatment, indifference, and abandonment things she’d known since childhood.
Peter had shown her a different kind of life, but unfortunately, the ghosts of her past wouldn’t let her accept the future he had tried to offer when they were young.
“Valerie, I need to ask you something important,” said Dr. Hill after a few moments.
“Yes… Go ahead.”
“What does Marcus mean to you?”
“Why are you asking me that?”
“You’ve already told me about Maximus as the father of your daughter and your former love. You’ve shared your thoughts and feelings about Peter. But what about Marcus? What’s going on with him?”
“Marcus came into my life when I least expected it. Honestly, if someone had told me back then that he’d be the man I’d spend the rest of my life with, I would’ve thought it was a joke.”
“Why do you say that?”
“Marcus was so different from Maximus and Peter. There were things about him that reminded me of Peter, but sometimes I think it was more about his demeanor. I knew from the start that they’d been best friends.”
“Okay, but you still haven’t answered my question.”
“Marcus… Marcus is my life. I miss him so much right now. It hurts to be far from him. It hurts that the last time we spoke, we fought. I know he’s made an extraordinary effort to understand me, and I don’t know how to make it up to him.
He doesn’t deserve someone like me. He should find a good woman. I’m just a woman with problems. Since the day we met, he’s been taking care of me and Serenity. Sometimes I feel like life hasn’t been fair to him, putting me in his path.”
“Valerie, don’t you think you’re being a bit unfair to yourself?”
“Why? I’m just telling the truth.”
“And is that really the truth?”
“What do you mean?”
“Let me ask you something. You just said Marcus is your life, but you don’t admit that you’re happy with him.”
“What?”
“I never heard you say you’re happy. Did I?”
When I met him, I wasn’t ready for anyone. What we have how happened little by little. I even know he was dating other women before I came into his life.”
“Have you ever asked him if he’s happy with you?”
Valerie was silent for a moment before saying, “No… But…
Valerie, I’m here to help you, to guide you to find answers to your questions. When I ask, it’s based on what you tell me. And in this case, I’m asking because I see a pattern of self–sabotage in you.
“No, that’s not true!”
“What isn’t?”
“What you’re saying about sabotaging thyself…”
“Are you completely sure about that?”
