Emma and Mary arrived at Fred’s clinic, and he was vilbly surprised to see Mary accompanied by the housekeeper rather than Maximus. 

“Mary! How are you feeling?” he asked warmly. 

“Hi, Fred. I’m okay. Honestly, I don’t really know what happened. I just remember heading toward the stairs, and after that… nothing until a few hours ago.” 

“I’m going to schedule some tests to rule out any long term complications,” Fred said, gesturing for 

her to sit. 

As he prepared, he turned to Emma, resting a hand on her shoulder. 

“Emma, could you help me find a nurse?” 

“Of course, sir,” Emma replied as they stepped outside the room. 

Once they closed the door behind them, Fred asked, “Emma, where’s Maximus?” 

“He called yesterday and 

“He called yesterday and told me to go to the house. He said Mary was asleep and that he had to leave for a trip.” 

“Hmm,” Fred murmured, frowning. “So he ran away 

“I’m not sure, sir. I don’t have more details.” 

“Don’t worry, Emma. I’ll examine Mary thoroughly to ensure there’s nothing serious.” 

After a long examination, Fred gave them the green light to leave the clinic. 

“Emma, it’s essential that Mary gets plenty of rest and avoids stress,” he instructed. “I noticed some irregularities in her head scans that concern me. Mary, have you ever had a serious accident where you hit your head?” 

“Not that I can remember,” she replied, shaking her head. 

“Hmm… well, we’ll monitor your progress. I need you to come back in three days for a follow–up. If anything feels off in the meantime, don’t hesitate to call me–I’ll come to you. Oh, and don’t worry about the bill. I’ll send it to Maximus.” 

Mary gave him a small, grateful smile as she and Emma left the clinic. They took a taxi back to the mansion, where life settled into a quiet routine. Maximus didn’t return, not even for a brief visit. 

Fred continued his regular checkups over the following weeks, still puzzled by the lingering irregularities in Mary’s brain scans. Meanwhile, Maximus’s absence stretched into a month. Emma found the prolonged disappearance unusual. When Maximus was single, he never stayed away for so long. She suspected he was with Alexia but kept her thoughts to herself.
