“And not just that–I’ll also make it public that your brother is holding my daughter hostage. If you give her back, I’ll make sure he gets to live a peaceful life in whatever psychiatric hospital they send him to.” 

“You’re a complete idiot. We have nothing to do with any of this.” 

“Are you sure about that? Because I have different information. Stop covering for your damn brother. He’s already doomed. For God’s sake, think about yourself. Think about my grandchildren. Protecting a criminal is a crime too. If you end up in prison, I’ll be the one gaining custody of them.” 

“Stop talking nonsense. Like I told you, we have nothing to do with your daughter. I was just as shocked as you when I heard the news. Or have you forgotten that we buried her together?” 

“Maximus, don’t take me for an idiot. I know you’d do anything to protect your damn brother, even lie to me. Think carefully, because if you don’t, he’ll be the one to pay the price,” Frank said before hanging up. 

Maximus didn’t waste a second–he immediately called Theodore, the one in charge of keeping Peter safe. 

“Theodore, tell me something,” Maximus said, his voice tight with concern. 

“What’s going on?”

“Where is Alexia Levett? Last I heard from Peter, Lucius had her in a hospital in Switzerland, but I need to know if she’s still there.” 

“Why are you asking about her?” 

“Frank Levett is looking for his daughter.”

“Maximus, Alexia dropped off our radar weeks ago. I thought you were keeping tabs on her, since Lucius was with her.” 

“No, Theodore, please, what the hell are you saying?” 

“I don’t have Alexia Levett. I was sure Lucius was the one watching over her… 

“A few days ago, Peter asked me about her, and that’s when we realized Lucius had her. But I thought you knew where she was.” 

“Why the hell didn’t you tell me anything?” 

“Maximus, to be honest, Alexia Levett is the least of my concerns right now. I’ve got enough on my plate working with the Moriartys and keeping an eye on Peter. And now you want me to take care of your wife too?” 

“Theodore, I wouldn’t be asking if my stupid brother hadn’t basically kidnapped my wife.” 

“Maximus! Just tell me Peter didn’t kill her like he originally planned. If Alexia is missing, it’s simple–contact Lucius. He has to know something about her.” 

Maximus dropped onto the couch, running a hand over his face. Finding Alexia was going to be a nightmare, especially since Lucius still refused to trust the man who claimed to be his father. And that was without even knowing the full truth. 

Time didn’t stop, and things were about to change for everyone. Marcus had left the country. Peter was holed up in a remote cabin, being monitored from a distance. 

Mary wasn’t happy with Maximus’s idea, but she didn’t have many options. Meeting Maximus’s new girlfriend had caught her off guard–she was too young for him, Hesperian, and had her own charm.

At first, Diana was clearly uncomfortable, but over time, she started getting used to the situation. Eventually, she and Mary could even have short conversations here and there. 

Days turned into weeks. Maximus had people searching for Alexia, just as they were looking for Lucius, but there was no trace of either of them. 

Six weeks passed. Some days were good for Mary, others were terrible. On those difficult days, surprisingly, Diana was the one who kept her company, trying to help her cope with her anxiety and worries about her children.
