[Maximus‘ Thoughts]
I can’t deny I miss Alexia, but I’m so angry with herber silence, her absence, leaving without a word. It’s the same as years ago when she went to Paris.
Spending time with Mary confuses me. Alexia’s absence, her not being here to whisper in my ear about what to do with this girl, makes things easier. Today, ecing Mary’s eyes light up with excitement reminded me of the moments we had before Alexia returned. For a second, I thought Mary might actually replace Alexia in my heart. But Alexia’s return stirred up the past.
I’m confused. I keep telling myself I’m a grown man shouldn’t doubt my feelings for Alexia. But being with Mary feels like home. Being with Alexia sometimes feels like we’re together just to avoid being alone. Mary brings a calmness I shouldn’t feel. I should hate her, but no matter how)
hard I try, I
can’t.
[Mary’s Thoughts]
Today was one of the best days of my married life–better even than my wedding day. Maximus acted in a way he hasn’t in a long time. We spent the whole afternoon together. He didn’t show affection, but his actions spoke volumes. I think I’m winning his heart. I know there’s a good man beneath that hard shell.
Now I remember why I agreed to marry him, why I gave up my freedom to be his wife. I just need to stop arguing and try to make him happy–especially now that Alexia’s gone.
Thousands of miles away, Alexia lay in bed with a mysterious man. Both were naked. The older man gently stroked her back, but her mind was elsewhere. She felt conflicted between her feelings for the man beside her and the one she claimed to love.
“Does Maximus know you’re here alone?” he asked.
“Probably,” she replied sadly.
“Are you afraid he’ll find us?”
“If anyone should be scared, it’s you, not me!”
“Well, I need to go. My family’s waiting for me. I won’t lie–finding you at that bar made me happy. But remember, I’m married. I love my wife and kids,” he said, getting out of bed,
“Do whatever you want! It was just to blow off steam,” she snapped, annoyed.
“I know that’s not true,” he said, cupping her chin and kissing her deeply before leaving.
Back in Valeria, it was the morning of December 24th. Maximus had taken the week off to stay home.

Emma was thrilled–he usually worked through New Year’s–but this time, he seemed relaxed. He even told Mary to plan the dinner menu.
Mary, with Emma’s help, went grocery shopping for the perfect Christmas dinner. This would be her first one as a wife, and it had to be flawless.
Meanwhile, Maximus had ordered a diainond necklace and matching earrings as a Christmas gift for Mary. When Matthew delivered the package, Maximus was impressed by its elegance. He had also purchased a stunning red dress for her.
He wanted to make this holiday special for his wife. While she was out, he left the jewelry and dress on their bed. Just as he finished, his phone buzzed. The screen showed the name Alexia Levett.
