Chapter 0804
Diana and Valerie walked down the hallway in complete silence. When they reached the coffee machine, Diana finally spoke.
“What happened, Valerie? I don’t really understand the situation, but if I’m not mistaken… that girl was your daughter?”
“Yes…” Valerie said through clenched fists. “And the boy holding her hand was Alden, Peter’s son.”
Hearing that, Diana immediately understood what was going on.
“Valerie… I don’t even know what to say…”
“There’s not much to say… It’s like my life can never be separated from the Palmers. Did you notice anything different about my daughter?”
“No… To be honest, I wasn’t paying close attention until I heard the slap and Maximus speaking.”
“My… My daughter is pregnant! Wasn’t it obvious?”
“Damn, woman… I told you I was distracted! I didn’t see anything.”
་་
“I know my daughter, and I don’t need to be a genius to figure out who the father is.”
“Valerie… Listen to me–listen to yourself,” Diana said, placing her hands on Valerie’s shoulders. “You need to calm down. Your daughter is an adult, and if this was going to happen, no force in the world could have stopped it. Just think about it–they had to travel all the way from Hesperia, and Alden had to come from Slovenia. According to what Maximus told me, they were living completely separate lives, and somehow, fate brought them together. Isn’t that a sign?”
“A sign of what, Diana? For God’s sake! You’re only a few years older than my daughter, and now you’re giving me advice?”
“Valerie, I might not be much older than Serenity, but I don’t need to be an expert to understand what’s going on in your head. Your fear, your discomfort–it’s about Peter, Alden’s father. But let me tell you something… Let the past go.”
“Yes, I won’t deny it. But tell me, how am I supposed to accept this?”
“Your daughter isn’t to blame. They aren’t to blame. Life brought them together, and their paths crossed for a reason. Don’t be too hard on your daughter–and don’t be too hard on yourself either. I know your reaction is mostly fear–fear of what Marcus will say, right?”
“Marcus… God! I don’t even want to imagine how he’s going to react.”
“And why should it matter?”
“Valerie, in case you’ve forgotten, your daughter is an adult. If she wanted to, she could leave and start a new life somewhere else–in another country, wherever she wants. If she fell in love with that boy, you should support her. Based on what you told me, if your suspicions are correct, she’s going to need you. She’s even younger than you were when you got pregnant with her.”
“I don’t want to sound harsh, and I don’t want to be cruel, but before you make her feel like she’s done something wrong, think carefully about what you’re going to say to her. She’s young, and at least she’s in love–which is more than you can say about yourself back then.”
“Diana! I told you about my past so you could understand me, not so you could throw it in my face!”
