Maximus drove to Magnus’ house. As he stepped out of the car, he carried the urn containing Leonardo’s ashes. Fortunately, the others were out, allowing him to enter quietly and go straight to his room without having to explain what he was carrying.
He placed the urn on a shelf and immediately opened the package he had received at the morgue.
What he found inside shocked him. As he unfolded the bundle, he realized it was a letter, wrapped in dirty papers and some old newspaper clippings. He stared at the envelope for a long time. It was addressed to him, but he had no idea what was inside. Just looking at it made his chest tighten.
After hesitating for a moment, he finally opened it. Several pages fell out, all handwritten. The different shades of ink and paper showed that it had been written over time. This was Leonardo’s final message.
As he was about to set the envelope aside, he noticed something else inside—a locket. It was a simple, oval-shaped piece of jewelry with a small dragonfly engraved at the center. Maximus froze when he saw it. His curiosity got the best of him, and he quickly opened it.
His eyes widened as he took in the tiny photograph inside.
A beautiful woman.
A very young, stunning woman.
Her features were delicate and harmonious. She had large, dark eyes and full lips. Her hair was long and dark, or at least that’s what he could tell from the tiny image.
The picture was small, making it hard to see details, but there was one thing he was sure of—she was Valentian. Her features made that clear. And it didn’t take much for him to realize who she was.
"Peter’s mother!" he said out loud.
His gaze shifted to the pages in front of him. His hands tightened around the letter as he began to read. The truth was right there, waiting for him in Leonardo’s words.
