My Love Until the Last Goodbye (Mary and Maximus) novel Chapter 981

Laura looked in the mirror and saw the man she had once loved still standing there. She couldn’t stop herself from crying. She drove away, and as soon as she found a quiet spot, she pulled over and broke down.

"Why, Adrian? Why?! You left us! You forgot about us!" she cried out, her voice shaking as tears blurred her vision.

She had forced herself to be strong. She couldn’t afford to let Adrian see her break. But now, the happiness she had felt earlier in the day was gone, overshadowed by the presence of the man she still loved—though, as she had said, her love for her daughter was far greater than any feelings she had for him.

After a few minutes of letting herself cry, she wiped her tears, looked at herself in the rearview mirror, and forced a smile before driving home. By the time she arrived, her eyes were no longer red, but her heart was still shattered. Emma greeted her at the door, holding Adele in her arms.

"Laura, your little one hasn’t stopped looking for you," she said as Adele’s face lit up at the sight of her mother.

"My baby, you have no idea how much I missed you today," Laura whispered, taking her into her arms.

"Laura, sweetie, are you okay?" Emma asked, sensing that something was off.

"Yeah, Emma, I just missed Adele," Laura replied as they walked inside.

She didn’t bother unloading the shopping bags from the car. Right now, all she wanted was to lie down, feel her daughter’s warm little body against hers, see those greenish-blue eyes looking up at her, and hold her close as she nursed.

Emma saw the exhaustion on her face and chose not to press any further. Instead, she simply smiled.

"Thank you, Emma! Thank you for taking care of my baby!"

"It’s nothing, sweetheart. I may be an old woman, but with Paul and Maurice helping, everything is much easier."

"I’m going to lie down with Adele for a bit. I’ll be out in time for dinner."

"Your dad called… He said he’s coming home today," Emma added carefully.

"My dad’s coming home today?" Laura asked, surprised.

"That’s what he said. He should be here later tonight. Oh, and Diana called too—she wanted to check in on you and see if you needed anything," Emma said, watching as Laura fell deep into thought.

"What did you tell her?" Laura asked, turning to face Emma.
