I felt as if my blood was becoming heavier and thicker, making my fragile heart nearly blow with every beat. I inhaled and exhaled erratically while locking my eyes on Will, begging him for a proper answer.
"What am I turning to?" I muttered, shivering in anxiety. "Will, what am I about to become?!" I cried out.
"Lilith, calm down!" He jumped up and placed his hands on my shoulders. "Look at me and breathe…" he said calmly.
I nodded and took air into my lungs while looking into his eyes.
"You don't have the wolf gene, but your DNA is special. Whereas some genes in your code stayed silent and now have been activated, I think you have assimilated something from vampire DNA as well," he explained.
"What do you mean?" I asked, trying to quickly process his words.
"There is a certain element in vampire blood called "nummularius" — a changer. It works quite much like a virus, injecting its DNA core into human cells and initiating the turn into a vampire. Nummularius needs a special environment to become active, a dead body, or on the verge of dying. However, for some reason, your cells partially accepted nummularius's DNA. I also think that was a trigger to activate your other super-genes…" he smiled nervously, anticipating my reaction.
"So… am I becoming some sort of hybrid? Will I develop blood lust or a sun allergy? And why now? I drank Sariel's blood three times already…" I pondered out loud, rubbing my hands and trying to prevent them from shaking.
"I don't know why it happened now… Maybe it was because of your blood loss after Sariel satiated his thirst? What I do know is that your body assimilates only those abilities that are beneficial to your body. It's like you are turning into Super-Lilith," he grinned.
"Super-Lilith…" I mumbled, putting a wry smile on my face.
"It's not bad at all," he chuckled, trying to cheer me up. "You are already stronger than any human. I think your speed and agility might increase with time. You can also develop sharper senses and no downsides."
An ironic laugh escaped my throat. I had fought with my body's weakness since forever. I had been an outcast, labeled as useless and defenseless, and now I was transforming into some sort of super-human. At least according to Will, I was.
"So… this change of mine, how long will it take, or when will it stop?" I asked, slowly accepting my new situation.
"I cannot predict the limit of your abilities. It's more like you have just received new talents, and now it is up to you whether you work on them or not." He shrugged.
I felt excitement growing within me at the thought that I had one more reason to get back to training. I couldn't wait to test my newly found strength in combat skills. A mere thought that I would be able to defend myself against vampires stirred a fire within me.
I was going back to the castle less anxious. I even chatted with Mike on the way back. It was easier to smile, partially knowing what was going on inside me. I sort of started to look forward to meeting this new me. By the time I arrived, it was already past 11 PM. I walked through the castle corridors quietly, hoping to lie down in bed and get some rest.
As I entered my room, my heart started to thunder, even before I turned on the light. I was hurrying to close the door, my hand searching for a light switch, when I felt a familiar cool breath on the nape of my neck
"Where were you all day?" Sariel angrily whispered in my ear, standing behind me.
He didn't wait for my answer. He turned me around to face him and slammed me against the door. I gasped in excitement, looking into his hungry eyes, ready to devour me. His jaw seemed tense, matching his frowning expression written with rage and desire. Was he truly that furious merely because I came late?
