It suddenly hit Charmaine, and she leaned forward, breaking the silence. “Mr. Emyr, were you out with that mysterious woman today?”

“Come on, Mr. Emyr, stop playing games.” Charmaine’s eyes glinted with mischief. “The one Mr. Keon mentioned at the reception dinner. The one you were so quiet about, even using me as a shield. She must be important to you.” 

Emyr’s glare sharpened, his eyes narrowing. “What if I say yes? What then?” 

His casual admission left Charmaine momentarily speechless. 

She blinked, taken aback. “Nothing. If you had a date, it’s none of my business.” 

With that, she turned her attention away from him, scooping up the tender beef she had planned to give him and adding them to her own bowl. She dug into the food with vigor, frustrated that her evening had been ruined by him. 

Of course, he had to take out his irritation on me after a bad date. Who else would he torture instead? I’m just his punching bag.

As Charmaine angrily shoved food into her mouth, Emyr raised an eyebrow slightly. 

She was acting like she didn’t care, so what is she upset about now? he wondered.
