He rubbed his chin, suddenly struck with inspiration. A sly grin spread across his face as he looked at her. “How about we form a new partnership?” 

Celeste, sensing trouble, took a step back. “What are you planning? Don’t tell me you want me to help you dodge those blind dates?” 

“You’re definitely Charmaine’s best friend, sharp as ever,” Rex noted, 

Celeste, feeling quite pleased with herself, smirked. “Obviously! Spending time with Charmaine has made me sharp–witted!” 

Then it hit her. She had walked right into his trap. She shot him a glare. “Forget it! I’m not teaming up with you to do something so underhanded.” 

“If you refuse, then that’s fine.” Rex sighed dramatically. “I’ll just have to ask Charmaine instead.” 

Celeste immediately snapped, “No way! You can’t go to Charmaine!” 

Rex gave her a questioning look, then realization dawned on him. “Ah, I get it now. You don’t seem too thrilled about me getting close to her.” 

What exactly was she up to? 

Celeste nearly bit her tongue, her eyes darting guiltily. Then, clenching her fists, she spoke firmly, “I just don’t want you bothering Charmaine. I’m her best friend, and if anything needs handling, I’ll take care of it. There’s no reason to drag her into this nonsense!” 

Of course, Rex had never actually intended to involve Charmaine.
