Charmaine moved silently across the room. When Rex glanced back casually and saw her, he was so startled that he fell straight to the floor with a thud. 

“D“mn! A ghost!” 

Charmaine pulled down her mask and shot him an exasperated look. “It’s me.” 

“Boss?” 

Rex patted his chest, still shaken. “You nearly scared me to death! I was wondering how someone could sneak into my office without a sound!” 

“What are you looking at? You didn’t even hear me come in.” 

Rex blurted out instinctively, “Nothing! I was just wondering why you’re fine standing up here when you were freaking out on the Ferris wheel … ” 

“Ferris wheel?” Charmaine narrowed her eyes suspiciously. 

Realizing he had slipped up, Rex clamped a hand over his mouth. “No … ” 

But it was too late. Charmaine had already put the pieces together. She narrowed her eyes dangerously. “Okay, it looks like the company has been a little too relaxed lately if you’ve got this much free time to follow me around.” 

At this point, Rex decided there was no point in pretending. Instead, he doubled down, crossing his arms and firing back, “I’m just looking out for you so you don’t get fooled by some sc*mbag. Charmaine blinked, then obediently lowered her head. “Alright, I was wrong. I shouldn’t have kept it from you guys. I just wanted to wait for the right time to make it public. But now that you already know…” 

She trailed off, watching as Rex’s expression softened slightly, his eagerness barely concealed as he waited for her to spill the name. 

Looks like he still doesn’t know it’s Emyr. 

Charmaine suddenly switched gears. “Then I guess I won’t say anything after all.” 

Rex was completely dumbfounded. She wasn’t playing by the rules at all. 

Realizing he’d been tricked, he ground his teeth in frustration. “Can we have a serious conversation for once?” 

Charmaine feigned innocence. “You already know, so what else is there to say?” 

Rex was so frustrated he nearly coughed up blood. He stomped his foot in exasperation. “I didn’t see anything! I followed you two that night, and I was this close to getting a look, but something kept interrupting me every single time! And I still haven’t been able to track down that car’s owner!”

Charmaine’s eyes flickered. “I get why you’d say Daniel, but the other three…”

Rex started counting them off on his fingers. “Shawn and Kane are notorious womanizers. They change partners like clothes, and they’ve dated practically every socialite in Eragos. There’s no way you’d go for them. As for Emyr? No!”
