Ingram didn’t even glance at him. After comforting Charmaine, he left to handle the chaos outside the hospital.
Paxton patted Charmaine on the arm, finally daring to smile and sigh with relief. “I’m glad you’re alright, or I wouldn’t have been able to face Master Field.”
“I’m fine, Mr. Zimmer. Sorry for taking up everyone’s time.”
Paxton shook his head with a smile and waved over the staff to help clean up the office, which had been left in disarray by the Whites.
Leah and Zayn became more embarrassed than ever.
In the past few days, they had gotten closest to Robin during the shoots.
Yet, when Paxton and Ingram had defended Robin, they hadn’t stood by her side.
Now Robin had pulled off a beautiful comeback, while the two of them, who had always claimed to admire her, turned into the useless burdens.
Frustration, anger, and regret swirled wildly in their chests.
Zayn felt his throat tighten as he reached out to Charmaine. “I’m sorry that I couldn’t protect you.”
Leah, biting her lip and sniffling as if aggrieved, added, “We didn’t expect someone to be so heartless and toy with people’s lives. We’re on the side of the truth. Dr. Robin, you understand, right?”
Her words made it seem as though they were the victims in all of this.
Charmaine glanced at the empty cat bed and was not bothered to respond. She walked straight out without another word.
Zayn, lost in despair, muttered to himself, “I’m such an idiot. How could I not trust her? She’ll never forgive me!”
Leah grabbed his arm and comforted him, “Zayn, don’t blame yourself. This isn’t our fault.”
“Why did you have to say
that?”
He hated how weak his trust in Robin had been and was even angrier at Leah for distracting him from the judgment.
Zayn shook her hand off roughly, shooting her a resentful glance before walking away.
Leah’s heart thumped ferociously.
That look–it was too familiar!
It reminded her of how Milo had looked at her once.
D*mn it, she had been so good to them. Her brothers were always talking about how important she was as a sister, and now one by one, they were turning their backs on her for others?

Charmaine searched the area nearby but couldn’t find the kittens.
The head nurse called her and informed her that she could resume seeing patients. Charmaine had no choice but to head back.
By the time the consultation session finished in the afternoon, the sky was covered with dark clouds.
The weather forecast had warned of thunderstorms.
Charmaine’s gaze flickered as a vague image, one she had desperately tried to forget, flashed in front of her
eyes.
Late at night, pouring rain.
Soaked to the bone, Charmaine, barely more than half the height of an adult, stood at the gates of the Read residence, clutching a trembling dog, about her size, in her arms.
Under the eaves, Sophie’s eyes gleamed with disdain.
“B*stard! I told you to go teach Mr. Sowle’s son, but you didn’t do your task properly. You sneak off behind my back, and now you want me to pay for a lowly dog’s medical bills? Are you out of your mind?”
