“Maybe for some people, but for you… well, that’s a bit trickier,” Charmaine remarked, her tone casual.
Milo didn’t know how to respond. He grabbed her meal card from her hand and tossed it carelessly aside.
She glanced at the card but didn’t give it any more thought.
The Nelson brothers, especially Milo, seemed to have inherited a rather shallow mindset.
They looked down on her to such an extent that they felt the need to take her meal card. How petty.
A few moments later, Milo came back, but this time he was carrying a bowl piled high with meat dishes.
He puffed out a breath, clearly pleased with himself, and started heaping the food onto Charmaine’s plate.
“Hold on, Milo. Are you really trying to feed me into a food coma?”
Is this the best he can come up with? It feels like the only way he knows how to bully me is by using the most direct and unsubtle approach.
Milo rolled his eyes, adopting a dramatic tone, “Come on, Charmaine, stop pretending. Of course you can’t make enough money working as a maid for Emyr.”
He handed her back the meal card. “I put 10,000 on here. Since you’re obviously not getting decent meals at the Crosses, you might as well eat well here at school.”
Charmaine stared at him in disbelief.
“Who told you I can’t afford food at the Crosses?” she asked, her voice incredulous.
“Come on, Charmaine, stop acting. Look at you–only eating bread and vegetables. You really think I can’t tell you’re broke?”
“Well, Mr. Milo, your keen observation skills and overactive imagination are truly something else.”
The truth was, Charmaine ate light at the cafeteria because she’d been enjoying plenty of luxury meals at the Crosses–this was just her way of giving her stomach a break.
But…
Charmaine tightened her grip on the meal card. “You really loaded 10,000 onto this?”
“Yeah, it’s more than enough for a year, right?”
“I’m not paying you back.”
“Don’t worry about it,” Milo said dismissively. “The cafeteria only lets you load up to 10,000. If they allowed it, I’d put in more.”
Charmaine raised an eyebrow, her expression turning sly. “Milo, don’t tell me you’re trying to play the ‘kind–hearted‘ card? Trying to guilt me into donating a kidney to Leah?”
Milo opened his mouth to protest but hesitated, caught off guard. “I’m not … ”

donate a kidney to Leah? Or are you just thinking of me as a pity case to hand out money to?”
Milo was speechless.
Under Charmaine’s icy gaze, he felt a sudden unease. She stared at him like he was a stranger–cold, emotionless, and it unsettled him deeply.
Suddenly, he stood up, his temper flaring. “What do you want from me? I already apologized. Why are you still acting so hostile?”
“Even though you apologized, that doesn’t mean I should forgive you”
Charmaine lifted her chin, her gaze sharp and unwavering, her resolve clear. There was no softness in her tone, just a hard certainty.
“What you and the Nelsons have done to me–I’ll never forgive it. Not ever.”
Milo took a step back, stunned.
That look in her eyes was enough to freeze his blood.
After a long pause, Milo, his face flushed with shame and frustration, turned on his heel and stormed off. “Fine, I’ll just pretend I dropped the 10,000 dollars in the ocean!”
