It was hard for Madeline not to notice it. 

A luxury car with a familiar license plate was parked there. Who else could it be but Monica?

In the living room. Madeline called Nolan to tell him about the bouquet that had smashed her. 

On the other end, there was a brief silence. The Nolan said, “Maddie, give me about three hours. I’ll hurry over, but I have surgery to perform- should take around an hour and a half. It’s for one of my former teachers, so I have to do it in person.” 

Nolan’s steady voice sounded steady and reassuring 

Madeline said, “Nolan, no hurry. I was just asking. If something really happens to me, I know how to get to the hospital myself. Besides, it’s just my guess. I might be overworried. Focus on your surgery and don’t worry about me. Go ahead with the procedure.” 

Madeline finished talking and hung up before Nolan could reply.
