“How did this happen? This is beyond just a scratch–I can see bone.” Madeline’s nose tingled as her throat tightened with emotion, her voice slightly shaky. 

“You’re this injured and still managed to cook all afternoon for me? And drove out of town to get mushrooms too?” She exclaimed, “Gavin, are you even taking care of yourself?” 

Through the mirror, Gavin saw her teary eyes, reminiscent of a little rabbit’s. His heart softened. “Maddie, it’s really not that bad. You know I’ve had worse in the Phantom Organization. 

“It’s been almost five years since we’ve had an extremely dangerous mission in Phantom Organization, so injuries have been rare. This was just a fluke–my own doing. No one else to blame.” 

Madeline didn’t respond, feeling a bit upset. She wondered, Injured like this and not a word to me? If I hadn’t noticed, he would’ve just healed in silence under the same roof?

Madeline didn’t respond right away, focusing intently on cleaning Gavin’s wound. She carefully removed the bandages. disinfected the injury with saline, and gently patted it dry with a cloth before applying the ointment Nolan had given her. 

Her brow furrowed in concentration. Once finished, Madeline sighed. “Don’t put your shirt back on yet. I wrapped it lightly to avoid pressing against the wound. 

“Make sure you sleep on your stomach tonight. A wound this big, if it gets infected, could be really troublesome.” 

“I got it,” Gavin replied with a slightly awkward cough. “But here we are, alone and young. With my physique being so irresistible, if I stroll around shirtless at home, you might just find my abs too tempting, He joked, hoping Madeline might actually find him attractive–he’d have a good laugh over it tonight. 

Madeline’s lips twitched. “Is that really your concern?” 

Three minutes later, Gavin was wearing a backless shirt that Madeline had cut for him. He stood silent. 

Madeline nodded approvingly. “Now it’s perfect. No worries about me seeing too much or impacting your healing. You’re free 

to wander at home, just like any young man should be careful of his modesty. Maybe you’re right after all” 

Gavin wondered if there was still time to take back his words. Going shirtless sounded much better to him now. Being young and all, maybe if Madeline saw him more often, she’d appreciate him more. 

That evening, Madeline settled on the couch and tuned into the debut episode of The Honor. She turned on the scrolling comments, figuring she wouldn’t have much screen time anyway–it’d just pass the evening boredom
