"Good night," Lila said with a smile.
I sighed. The warmth and coziness of her home only made the emptiness of my new apartment feel even more stark in contrast.
Whatever. It was time to head back.
I pulled out my phone and ordered a cab. While waiting, I glanced up at the building. That bodyguard Lila mentioned… Could he be some kind of stalker?
I shook my head to force the ridiculous thought away.
Just as I reached the entrance of the complex, I spotted a familiar figure.
It was Alex. He was leaning against a sleek black luxury car with a cigarette between his fingers. The moment he saw me, he stubbed out the cigarette and strode over. "Serena, we need to talk."
I quickened my pace, pretending not to see him and silently praying he wouldn't call out to me.
But, of course, things never went the way I wanted them to. Within moments, he caught up and blocked my path.
"Serena, we need to talk," he repeated, his tone making it sound like I was the one who had wronged him.
I stopped and looked at him. "What's there to talk about?"
He let out a bitter laugh. "I know you're still mad at me, but—"
"What would I be mad at you for?" I cut him off. "Some things happened, and that's that. What's in the past is in the past."
Honestly, I was more curious than anything. What exactly was he trying to pull here?
But he acted as if he hadn't heard me. Instead, he continued, "I've been keeping an eye out for job opportunities for you. If you have any preferences, let me know."
