He didn't insist, just gave a slight nod and said, "I'll walk you home."
I was about to refuse again when Conrad Wagner added, "It's really late, and it's not safe for you to walk alone."
This was a churchyard, what could possibly go wrong here?
I silently rolled my eyes, but then he mentioned, "What if there are bugs or snakes around?"
That shut me up real quick. I was terrified of those things, no doubt about it.
I had to admit, after a decade of being together, he knew exactly how to get me to agree to things when it really mattered.
Conrad's comment also gave me a segue to bring up Fanny Willis and the incident with the snake delivery, and I told him who was behind it.
Conrad's eyes turned cold. "These people are absolutely insane."
Exactly, which was why I was increasingly worried about Fanny.
"He won't come after you, but he might target those around you," Conrad murmured softly.
We both knew who the "he" was in Conrad's statement.
Thinking about Dustin Wagner, with his seemingly gentle demeanor, I couldn't help but say, "The old saying is true, you can't judge a book by its cover. I never thought he'd go down this path."
Conrad stayed silent, and I let out a dry laugh. "You don't really think it's because of me, do you?"
"There is that factor, but there's also his jealousy. Jealous of me," Conrad said, lowering his head before suddenly raising a hand to cover his nose.
"What's wrong?" I asked instinctively.
He shook his head slightly, "Nothing, just felt like sneezing."
But I saw the red trickling through his fingers.
"How does sneezing lead to a nosebleed?" I said, eyeing his pale face and gaunt features. "Conrad, what's really going on with you?"

Good read. I like it when the protagonist is awesome, smart and straightforward as Felicia....
