I was completely stunned.
I knew my aunt's health had been declining, so I could come to terms with her passing. But my uncle? He was perfectly fine just the other day. How could he be gone so suddenly?
"What happened to my uncle?" I asked, my voice trembling with confusion and fear.
"You should come over, and we can talk more," the young nurse said, offering no further explanation before hanging up.
I stood there for a while, phone in hand, trying to process what I'd just heard. It was a feeling that took me back to the day my parents passed away.
I remember it vividly. It was a particularly sunny day, and the teacher was going over English grammar when Mr. Herschel, our neighbor, walked into the classroom and asked to speak with me. As soon as I saw him, he pulled me into a hug and said softly, "Kiddo, you have us, remember that."
Even though I was young, I sensed that something was wrong. "Did something happen to Uncle?"
His eyes glistened with tears, "Felicia, your parents are gone."
I don't know if I was in shock or just too young to comprehend, but I asked, "Gone? What do you mean?"
Herschel gently stroked my hair, "Gone means they're not here anymore... you'll never see them again."
"Not even one of them?" I asked, probably too dazed to fully grasp what he was saying.
Herschel just held me tighter, offering no further explanation.
Losing two loved ones at once was such a devastating blow, something I never thought I'd have to endure twice in a lifetime.

Good read. I like it when the protagonist is awesome, smart and straightforward as Felicia....
