But breaking this ring was almost impossible. First off, I didn't have any tools, and even if I did, any movement from me would alert Allen right away.
Ernest said it was an information collector, so it must be capable of remote transmission. If it can transmit remotely, there has to be a wireless receiver. My phone should be able to detect a wireless signal then.
Thinking about this, I couldn't wait to grab my phone and start searching for wireless signals. Sure enough, there was a signal source with a mix of letters and numbers on the list.
I looked at it. The signal read qqbb522, with the last three numbers being my birthday. I didn't bother to figure out what the letters meant. I immediately connected to this signal.
When it prompted for a password, I remembered the code Ernest once gave me for his bank card. I entered it and added the last three digits of my birthdate.
Watching my phone display "connecting," my heart raced like never before.
Connected!
Those words made my blood boil with excitement—it actually worked.
But then, my phone started behaving as if it had a virus, completely out of my control, as if an invisible hand was operating it. Then the screen went black.
I jumped in fright.
Could it really be a virus?
I hurriedly tapped the black screen, and it lit up again, displaying colorful fireworks and a line of text: "You little fool, you kept me waiting for so long."
Reading those words made my eyes well up. I stared at the screen, not daring to blink. I knew there was more to come.
Sure enough, another line appeared: "Hand the ring to someone you trust the most and have them give it to the police. If all goes well, we’ll see each other next week."
I was a bundle of nerves and excitement, still glued to the screen, hoping for more messages.
But just then, there was a knock at the door, and I was jolted back to reality. I quickly hid my phone and poked my head out from under the covers. "Who is it?"
"It's me, Yolande."
I let out a sigh of relief, "I was sleeping. Anything I can do for you, Ms. Clark?"
"Open the door!"
