Estrella bumped into him at the city council meeting today.
"I heard his new venture is doing quite well, about to hit the stock market soon," Cole mentioned.
Estrella chuckled, "He wouldn't let himself fail, always aiming for the stars."
Jason, who was he to settle for mediocrity? No matter where he was, he'd always shine the brightest.
Sensing Estrella's nonchalance, Cole nudged, "Estrella, maybe it's time you and Jason had a proper talk?"
Both Cole and Landon felt a lingering guilt about Jason's departure. After 30 years, there were too many things left unexplained.
Their biggest regret was playing matchmaker for their kids, only to see them drift apart.
Cole suggested making amends, but Estrella, passing him a bowl of soup, laughed it off, "Dad, don't worry about it. I'm doing great, no need for that now."
Estrella believed the world keeps turning, regardless of who leaves. Life goes on.
Seeing Estrella's stance, Cole conceded, "Well, you’ve always been headstrong. Just do what you think is best."
"Right!" Estrella replied, then turned to Isaac, "Sweetheart, finish your meal, no bargaining!"
"Okay!" Isaac hurriedly shoveled down his mac and cheese, earning a warm smile from Estrella as she served him more greens.
Soon, Autumn brought over more veggies, and the family enjoyed a hearty dinner together.
At nine, after her shower, Estrella was ready for bed when Isaac, grinning ear to ear, barged in with his pillow.
Estrella made room for him, knowing all too well his little schemes.
Isaac, thrilled, climbed into bed, handing Estrella a sci-fi book to read aloud.
Estrella, feigning exhaustion, burrowed into the blankets, "I'm too tired, read to me instead."
Isaac, failing to coax her out, resigned to reading himself.
Lying beside him, Estrella stroked his face, noting how much he resembled Jason, making it hard to forget him.
"Standing under the twinkling sky, he suddenly felt the universe was so small, confining only him," Isaac read before complaining of tiredness.
Estrella, amused, took the book, pulling him close, "Then let's sleep."
Isaac nodded eagerly, nestling into her embrace.
Turning off the lights, Estrella began an age-old bedtime story, "Once upon a time, there was an old man and an old woman..."
Ever since Jason asked her to move on, Estrella and Autumn avoided mentioning him around Isaac, fearing it would affect his growth.
Isaac seemed to accept his reality, never questioning why it was just him and his mom, which relieved Estrella.
Jason withdrew, his emotions complex, but Estrella, with a graceful smile, told him, "We'll be on our way then. Enjoy your day."
With that, Estrella and her son continued their adventure, leaving Jason with his thoughts, pocketed hands, and a quiet acknowledgment.
Estrella called out, "Son, say goodbye to your uncle."
After Isaac and Jason exchanged their goodbyes, Estrella took her son for a rock climbing adventure.
The artificial rock wall was impressively realistic, towering and vast. Isaac, after strapping on his safety harness, flashed a thumbs-up to Estrella before beginning his ascent.
Down below, Estrella was busy capturing every moment on her camera, showering Isaac with praises about how amazing he was doing and how high he was climbing.
Jason, from a short distance away, hadn't immediately taken his leave. He watched the mother and son until he got into his car. And even then, he didn't drive away right away; instead, he sat quietly, observing Estrella and Isaac.
Estrella had fully come to terms with Jason's departure, had let go completely.
And while this was exactly what Jason had hoped to see, it was also the sight that pained him the most.
