Estrella's sudden kiss took Jason completely by surprise, his eyes widening as he tried to process what was happening.
He never saw it coming; Estrella making the first move was not something he expected, especially with such a sudden, intense kiss that left him completely off guard.
For a moment, he froze, her lips still pressed against his. Then, cupping her face in his hands, he parted her lips to deepen the kiss.
Estrella closed her eyes, wrapping her arms around his neck, standing on tiptoe to meet his kiss with equal fervor.
Before meeting up with him, she hadn't planned on acting so impulsively.
But seeing his delighted surprise and hearing him express his concern for her, she lost control.
After a dizzying, passionate kiss, they found their way back to the car.
The seats were reclined flat, with Estrella lying on the passenger seat and Jason on the driver's seat, facing each other. Jason gently stroked Estrella's face.
Holding onto his wrist, Estrella whispered, "Don't leave. Let's just stay like this. We can both be good parents to Isaac and find our own peace."
She had sensed his anxiety over the phone that night.
Coming over in the dead of night, without saying a word, she had a pretty good idea of what was going on.
And then, earlier at Isaac’s daycare, when that black car ran the stop sign and several men suddenly appeared around her, Estrella had noticed.
She understood the situation.
Asking him not to leave, suggesting they both be good parents to Isaac, speaking of finding their own peace.
Jason looked at her for a while, then lifted her head to his chest and kissed her forehead tenderly.
He was touched by her understanding, moved that she knew everything without him having to say a word, that she was cooperating with him.
With Jason's kiss pressing firmly on her forehead, Estrella slowly closed her eyes, saying nothing more.
Between them, there was no need for further explanation.
Jason didn't leave. He didn't let her go. Estrella didn't get out of the car to return home. Instead, she fell asleep in his arms, just like that.
Usually, Jason needed medication to sleep, but that night, sleeping in the car next to Estrella, he found a rare moment of peace.
---
The next morning, Estrella woke up to find a little face pressed against the car window. Isaac was staring intently inside.
Startled, Estrella quickly sat up and opened the car door.
Upon seeing her, Isaac leapt from Autumn's arms, full of curiosity. In his sweet, childlike voice, he asked, "Mommy, why are you sleeping here?"
Yawning, Estrella scratched her head and said, "Buddy was sick, so I was here to keep watch."
Buddy, the Dorvold family's Border Collie, had been having stomach troubles lately.
Autumn, with a look of disapproval, said, "Of all the excuses, you had to compare yourself to a dog."
From the driver's side, Jason also laughed, ruffling her tousled hair: "You really have no filter."
Estrella claimed she was keeping watch, and Isaac giggled, saying, "Tonight, I’ll keep watch with Mommy."
Stepping out of the car, Estrella said, "Alright! I'll bring the dog over."
The car was quiet, and seeing Autumn in a particularly good mood, Isaac asked, "Grandma, are Mommy and Uncle good friends?"
Autumn's face darkened at the question, looking down at Isaac, she corrected him, "Who told you he's your uncle? That's your dad, your real dad."
"Ah?" Isaac's jaw nearly dropped in shock, his mouth hanging open as he processed the news, "I have a dad?"
Isaac gazed at Autumn like he'd just stumbled upon the lost city of Atlantis, but the kid had never even seen his dad. Nobody had ever mentioned the guy to him!
He had kinda assumed he was like Spider-Man, somehow magically swinging into existence without any ordinary human process.
Isaac's face was a picture of utter bewilderment, leaving Autumn caught between laughter and tears, awkwardly trying to explain, "Of course you have a dad, kiddo. How else do you think you got here?"
Isaac was still in shock, barely daring to believe as he asked, "But no one ever told me! Grandma, you used to say I was the result of cutting-edge science and technology!"
That old excuse Estrella had concocted to bamboozle Autumn was now being used on Isaac, and boy did he buy it. He even felt quite special, believing he wasn't like other kids but rather a robot.
Despite his young age, Isaac had a rich inner world!
"…Did I say that?" Autumn squirmed, avoiding eye contact. "I don't think I did."
"You did, Grandma," Isaac insisted, quickly activating his smartwatch with his childishly sweet voice. "I gotta ask mom what's going on. How come I'm not a robot?"
Jason, hands firmly on the steering wheel, couldn't help but laugh, even as it tugged at his heartstrings.
Isaac was raised well, utterly adorable and innocent, not at all seeming like a kid missing out on a father's love.
Soon after, Estrella picked up the phone, and Isaac went straight to the point, "Ella, Grandma said that 'uncle' is actually 'dad'. But wasn’t I the result of science and technology? Am I not a robot anymore?"
