Grant's frustration was evident as he said, "Taylor, whatever beef we have between us has nothing to do with Arielle. You should really know where to draw the line."
Grant knew Taylor was only with Leonora to get back at him. He understood Taylor had no intention of being responsible for her.
He added, "As long as you agree to leave Arielle alone, I'll agree to any terms you set."
What Grant hadn't anticipated was dragging Leonora into the longstanding feud between himself and Taylor. Had he known it would come to this, no matter how much he adored Leonora, he would have restrained his feelings and avoided getting involved with her.
Grant's concession only irritated Taylor further. His words seemed to imply that he and Leonora shared true love, portraying Grant as the third wheel. Initially, it was Taylor who had abandoned Leonora, leaving her behind. Regardless of the reasons, it was he who left her.
Approaching Taylor, the two men nearly the same height, Taylor said with a soft chuckle, "Letting go of Leonora? How do you know she isn’t with me willingly?"
Grant replied firmly, "Arielle wouldn’t fancy you; you’re not her type. She wouldn’t willingly be with you."
Taylor's gaze turned colder at Grant's confidence, but he restrained himself from physical confrontation, merely smiling, "Oh, is that so? Perhaps you’re mistaken, uncle. As the saying goes, a couple bonded for a night shares a hundred days of affection, and I’ve been with Leonora for two years. Are you so certain your half a year with her outweighs my two?"
Taylor felt that Leonora was happy with him and wasn’t as reluctant as Grant suggested.
"Taylor, if your aim was revenge, you’ve had your taste; if it’s to prove who’s better, then let’s compete fairly. If Arielle chooses not to be with you, you'll accept defeat gracefully."
What Grant failed to realize was that Leonora didn’t want to choose between them; she wanted neither. Seeing Taylor's silence, Grant prodded, "Are you scared?"
Taylor laughed, "Leonora is already my girlfriend. What grounds do you have to talk about fair competition?" His tone then turned serious, "Uncle, if there’s nothing else, please return to your own office. Don’t stir up trouble here; it’s not good for the company."
Grant had always been composed. Despite their years of rivalry, Taylor had never seen him lose his cool. This victory brought Taylor joy, yet also concern. Joyous, because he had his revenge. Concerned, for fear Grant would approach Leonora.
Without realizing it, Taylor's feelings for Leonora had evolved beyond just using her for revenge.
Grant asserted, "I won’t let you bully Arielle anymore."
Two years ago, when he left, Grant was aware of his betrayal towards Leonora. He hadn’t dared hope for reconciliation, yet he felt guilty for dragging her into his mess. If Taylor genuinely cared for her, he would wish them well. But no one knew better than Grant how reckless Taylor could be, especially since he resented Taylor for pressuring Leonora into drinking, a girl Grant cherished deeply.
Looking at Taylor, Grant added, "And about Ava, there was never anything between us. If she had feelings for me, it was one-sided. It’s time you let that go."
Ava was Taylor’s first love who ended up with Grant, deepening the rift between them, eventually leading to Taylor using Leonora to get back at Grant. At the time, Taylor wasn’t particularly attached to Ava; his pride was just wounded.
Taylor’s expression darkened at the mention of the past. Always proud, Taylor never imagined himself the victim of such betrayal, making it a sore spot in his heart.
"The company’s buzzing now."
At the door, Leonora paused, her expression tightening, a sense of dread settling in.
Taylor and Grant had fought? This couldn’t possibly involve her, she reassured herself, determined to believe she wasn’t the cause. She wasn’t that important or influential. Grant had disappeared without a word, and Taylor had used her as a pawn; she was just an insignificant piece in their game.
Leonora stood frozen at the door until someone called out to her, snapping her back to reality. "It's nothing, nothing at all," she muttered, clutching the freshly printed documents as she made her way back to her desk.
Yet, her mood failed to settle down. She considered resigning. Otherwise, once her affair with Grant Taylor becomes public, she'd be too ashamed to face anyone. She didn't want to deal with the complications, nor did she want to thrust herself into the spotlight. She admitted to herself that she was a coward. If she hadn't been so timid, Taylor wouldn't have been able to push her around for so long.
Distractedly organizing her documents, Leonora thought about having a talk with Taylor, to share her concerns with him. He had promised that once Grant returned, he would let her go. Now that Grant was back, she had played her part in their drama, regardless of whatever unresolved issues there were between him and Grant. She had helped him get his revenge.
---
Evening came. Leonora waited until the office was empty before she slowly began to pack up for the day. Just as she stepped out of the company's front door, lost in thought, the sound of a car horn snapped her back to reality.
Looking up, she saw the car window roll down slowly, revealing Taylor. Lately, he had gotten into the habit of picking her up after work to drive her back to Southbay.
