After unexpectedly bumping into each other, Leonora seemed a lot more composed than she had been in days. Her parents had finally sorted out the mess with her uncle, and they were more passionate and appreciative of life than ever before.
One evening, Leonora stayed late at the office. As she waited for the elevator to go home, she saw Grant inside.
She hesitated, feeling awkward. Staying at Ferguson Group seemed like a bad decision; it only led to these uncomfortable encounters.
Inside the elevator, Grant noticed her pause and quickly reached out to hold the doors open. "Arielle," he called out.
Hearing her name snapped Leonora back to reality. She greeted him politely, "Mr. Taylor," and stepped in.
As the elevator descended, Grant broke the silence. "Working late?"
"Yes," she replied.
They made small talk until the elevator reached the ground floor. Just as Leonora was about to say goodbye, Grant spoke up, "Arielle, you haven't had dinner yet, right? Let's grab a bite nearby."
"No, it's okay, my mom..." Leonora started but was cut off.
"Dinner won't take long, and it's been a while since we had a good chat," Grant insisted.
Since Grant had returned and aside from that one time he sought her out to explain himself, he hadn't really disrupted her life. Leonora felt it would be petty to refuse.
"Alright then," she agreed.
Grant's face lit up, his eyes sparkling. They walked to the outdoor parking lot together, and Grant quickly opened the passenger door for her. Leonora thanked him and got into the car.
Grant couldn't hide his smile as he got into the driver's seat. After asking what she wanted to eat and getting a "whatever's fine" in response, he chose a nearby restaurant known for its home-style cooking, which he knew she liked.
At the restaurant, Grant's care for Leonora was unmistakable, and he seemed genuinely happy. For the first time since their unexpected parting over two years ago, he felt such joy.
After the waiter served the dishes, Grant poured tea for Leonora, asking, "Arielle, how have you been?"
Grant knew about Leonora's breakup with Taylor and that she had taken some time off work afterward.
Accepting the tea, Leonora held the cup with both hands. "Pretty good," she said.
When Grant softly inquired about her and Taylor, Leonora looked at him. "Taylor and I have broken up, amicably."
She paused before adding, "He ran into his first love at a restaurant one day. She explained a misunderstanding from the past."
Explaining this was awkward for Leonora. Their rivalry had turned her into a mere pawn in their game, a joke.
At Taylor's question, Blake hurriedly reported, "Ms. Arielle has been punctual to work, occasionally staying late." Blake's voice dropped a bit as he continued.
Seeing this, Taylor looked up, his expression stern. "Why stop? Is there something I shouldn't hear?"
Taylor knew Blake well after years of working together. A sudden drop in tone meant there was something upsetting that mattered to him.
Under Taylor's gaze, Blake cautiously shared, "Ms. Arielle ran into the Deputy Chairman after work today. He drove her home. They had dinner together and walked by the river."
Leonora and Grant's rare encounter was accidentally witnessed by Blake in the parking lot. Leonora was the one person Taylor cared about the most, and so did Grant. Seeing the scene before him, Blake naturally didn't hesitate and immediately sent someone to follow the two. Thus, he got a clear picture of Leonora's whereabouts that evening.
At his desk, Taylor's reaction to the news was predictable. Ha! That day in Southbay when he ran into her and asked her to have lunch with him, she declined. But now, she not only dines with Grant but also takes a stroll with him. How come he felt her promises and vows from a few days ago were so unreliable? Were their two years together not worth as much as Grant's six months?
Thinking this, Taylor was fuming. Seeing Taylor's dark expression, Blake quickly explained, "Ms. Arielle has already arrived home."
Despite Taylor's usually genteel demeanor, no one could stand up to him when he got serious. Worried he might confront Grant again or make things difficult for Leonora, Blake hurriedly tried to smooth things over. Moreover, if he pushed Leonora too hard this time, they might truly be over.
Blake was anxious, but Taylor, keeping his cool, said, "You can leave work now."
Upon hearing Taylor's order, Blake quickly made his exit. The moment the office door closed, Taylor slammed his phone down on the desk. So, Grant, he claimed to leave Ravenwood, was that just leading him on? And Leonora, it was time to reel her back in.
