"After Master Wellspring withdrew from the secret realm, he did not dare linger for even a moment.
He clenched his teeth and flew straight toward Beastmoor Ridge."
"His injuries were severe.
Two ribs in his chest had been broken. His left arm hung uselessly at his side, and every movement of his right leg sent pain drilling through him."
"His face had gone as pale as paper.
Cold sweat kept sliding down his forehead, and blood had soaked through his clothes until the fabric clung to his body, sticky and cold."
"But he did not dare stop.
If that figure chased him out, he might not survive. If Venerable Starwick's men appeared at a time like this, there would be nowhere left to run."
"He clenched his teeth and drove the last scraps of spiritual power left in his body.
The auspicious cloud underfoot had dimmed until it was nearly scattered apart, but it still held on, carrying him forward."
Whatever he dreaded most came straight for him.
He had flown less than a thousand miles when, ahead of him, five streaks of golden radiance cut into the sky.
"The five streaks came in impossibly fast.
They tore across the open air with a shrill scream, and in the blink of an eye, they had already blocked Master Wellspring's path."
"The golden radiance scattered.
Five figures emerged from it—the very ones he could least afford to meet: Venerable Starwick and the four Golden Immortal elders at his side."
Elder Rowe. Elder Pennyworth. Elder Sunter. Elder Leary.
"The four of them let their auras gather into one crushing weight.
It bore down like a mountain, pressing so hard that Master Wellspring could barely draw breath."
"And standing at the very front was Venerable Starwick, peak Golden Immortal Level Three.
Golden holy radiance flowed around him, his pressure as heavy as a mountain, his presence surging high enough to drown the sky."
Every trace of color drained from Master Wellspring's face.
"Almost without thinking, he pushed the jade phial in his arms deeper into his clothes.
His fingers tightened around the verdant longsword."
"The cracks along the longsword looked harsh and glaring under the sunlight.
The spiritual light on the blade had almost completely faded, but he still held on with everything he had."
Venerable Starwick looked at Master Wellspring, and a cold curve lifted at the corner of his mouth.
"His gaze swept over Master Wellspring.
It took in the torn robes, the useless left arm, the wounds covering him from head to toe, and nothing in Starwick's eyes bothered to hide how little he thought of what stood before him."
"Master Wellspring, instead of staying properly inside the Wellspring Order, what are you doing running all the way to the Greywild Mountains? Looking for something, maybe? Something to rebuild a body for that frail remnant soul?"
Master Wellspring clenched his teeth and said nothing.
"A mouthful of blood clogged his throat.
He could neither swallow it down nor spit it out."
"No words would change anything.
Venerable Starwick would not spare him. He would not spare the Aureate Heir."
"Venerable Starwick's gaze landed on the jade phial in his arms.
His eyes held nothing back. Everything he wanted was right there."
"That violet soul. The golden codex. The sovereign relic that surpassed the Golden Immortal realm.
All of it was inside that small jade phial."
All Venerable Starwick had to do was kill Master Wellspring, and everything would belong to him.
"That violet soul is in your arms, isn't it? Hand it over, and I can spare your life."
"Master Wellspring tightened his grip on the longsword, lifted his head, and looked straight at Venerable Starwick.
Word by word, he said, ""Dream on."""
Venerable Starwick's face darkened, and a sharp edge flashed through his eyes. "You refuse the toast and choose the punishment. Elder Rowe, kill him."
"Elder Rowe stepped out at the command.
The gilded war-sabre left its sheath, a blinding blade-light rolling over its body, and he slashed straight for Master Wellspring's throat."
"The strike was fast and vicious.
Its edge ripped through the air with a piercing scream."
"Master Wellspring raised his sword to block.
Blade and sword crashed together, throwing fire sparks in every direction. He was already badly wounded, and that single slash tore open the web of his hand. Blood ran down the hilt, and the longsword nearly flew out of his grasp."
"The force drove him back several steps.
His feet stumbled under him, and he almost went down."
"Elder Pennyworth, Elder Sunter, and Elder Leary closed in as well.
They surrounded Master Wellspring from every side. The four elders' auras wove together like four iron walls, sealing off every path of retreat."
The bottom dropped out beneath Master Wellspring.
There might be no leaving today.
"He lowered his gaze to the jade phial in his arms.
Inside it, the violet soul gave off a faint glimmer, as if telling him not to give up."
"Aureate Heir, your servant is useless..." he murmured, his voice so low it was almost swallowed by the air.
"Just then, a white light shot in from the edge of the sky.
