"Master Wellspring's tears finally broke loose.
Drop by drop, they struck the cold floor as his voice came apart. ""Aureate Heir... Aureate Heir... you finally came back..."""
He had waited far too long for this day.
"From the moment Jared's body had been destroyed and only a wisp of soul had drifted back to the Wellspring Order, every step had been bought with danger.
They had gone to Beastmoor Ridge to seek the Elderheart Soulwood. Venerable Starwick had intercepted them. Morgana had been wounded. Then came the Primordial Sanctuary, where they had pushed through one peril after another to bring back the spiritual water.
Not one step had come easily. Not one step had been safe."
But he had never given up.
Morgana stood to the side, watching Jared in the jade basin, and the corners of her mouth lifted just a little.
The curve of that smile was faint, but there was a softness in it that words could barely hold.
"She had lived for tens of thousands of years. She had seen countless partings between life and death, and watched countless prodigies rise only to fall.
Yet in this moment, something wordless settled in her chest like a mercy."
Dear Catina had met him.
He had not died out in the Wastelands.
He had come back.
Jared slowly opened his eyes.
"A trace of confusion flickered through those violet pupils.
It was not the blankness of ignorance. It was the disorientation of someone waking from darkness and seeing light again after too long."
"He lowered his gaze to his own hands.
His fingers curled, then tightened into fists, and he felt the spiritual power moving through his body."
"That spiritual power was deep and pure.
Compared with the strength he had possessed before his body was destroyed, it was not weaker in the slightest. If anything, it had surpassed it."
"Master Wellspring." His voice came out a little hoarse, but every word landed clearly. "I'm back."
Master Wellspring dropped to his knees with a heavy thud and struck his forehead hard against the floor, sobs breaking through before the words could hold. "Aureate Heir... Aureate Heir... your servant... your servant..."
"He could not finish.
A thousand words jammed in his throat, and all of them turned into one broken sound after another."
"Jared stepped out of the jade basin, soaked from head to toe.
Violet spiritual light flowed around him, steaming the water from his body into a thin white mist."
He walked to Master Wellspring, bent down, and helped him up.
"Master Wellspring, you have carried so much. If not for you during these days, I might have died in the Wastelands long ago. The debt I owe you is one I will keep in my heart."
Master Wellspring shook his head and wiped hard at his tears. "Aureate Heir, you give me too much credit. Your servant did all this not for you alone, but for the Aureate Way, for Mr. Chance, and for the Wellspring Order. As long as the Aureate Heir could recover, your servant would gladly be ground to dust and scattered."
Jared patted his shoulder and said nothing more.
"Some debts did not need to be kept on the tongue.
It was enough to carry them in the heart."
He turned and looked at Morgana.
His figure lay reflected in her amber eyes.
"Your Majesty, thank you. Without you, I could not have obtained the Genesis Dew, and I could not have rebuilt my body."
Morgana shook her head, the corners of her mouth lifting slightly. "No need to thank me. You are the one dear Catina chose. It was only right for this sovereign to help you."
She paused, then added, "Besides, this sovereign did not come away with nothing. Your new body carries the Aureate Way's protective sigils. That is the Aureate Codex's power. I have lived for tens of thousands of years, and this is the first time I have ever seen it."
"Jared lowered his head and looked at the golden lines crossing his body.
For a moment, he said nothing."
Then he closed his eyes and looked inward into the spirit well.
