News of Pole Star Hall's destruction spread across the Seventeenth Firmament.
When word reached Saintspire Court that Pole Star Hall had been razed and Starwick had died in battle, Clarendon was meditating on the sacred dais.
He sat cross-legged at the center of ninety-nine sunstones, his white robe pure as snow, his face composed.
At a glance, he looked less like a man than some transcendent idol untouched by the world.
But anyone who looked closely would have seen his fingers trembling.
"Jared... leveled Pole Star Hall?"
His voice stayed calm, but there was no hiding the chill rising underneath it.
"Yes."
The disciple kneeling below the sacred dais had gone ghost-pale.
"The ninefold hall-warding array was split open with a single sword strike. Starwick took the last of the elders and hid in the underground vault, but Jared killed him with his own hands.
Pole Star Hall... no longer exists."
Clarendon sat in silence for a long time.
The holy radiance on the sacred dais still felt warm, but a coldness seeped through him anyway, straight out of his bones.
His mind went back to everything that had happened—to the three-thousand-strong host of Pole Star Hall marching out in overwhelming force, only to lose more than half its strength before Beastmoor Ridge.
To Starwick burning his blood essence in a final desperate gamble, while he and Glacier stood by and did nothing.
To Glacier turning on them mid-battle because of the Frost Deity Branch Ancestor's remnant soul, while he himself took the disciples of Saintspire Court and retreated without a backward glance.
And now Pole Star Hall was gone. Starwick was dead.
And the man who had set all of it in motion—Jared—was coming for Saintspire Court with an army at his back.
"Two thousand men... Deepvault Cloister joined him too... and Jared is leading them himself..."
His heart clenched like an invisible hand had closed around it and squeezed.
He knew exactly what eight hundred disciples of Saintspire Court were worth against Jared's sword.
Glacier stood with Jared. Morgana stood with Jared.
"Court Master!" Another disciple rushed into the great hall, terror written all over his face. "Beastmoor Ridge's host has already reached the court gates! Jared sent a message. He said..."
"Said what?"
"He said you're being given two choices. The first is surrender—hand over all of Saintspire Court's resources, abandon the celestials' stronghold in the Seventeenth Firmament, and withdraw to the Upper Realm. The second..."
The disciple's voice shook. "The second is to end up like Pole Star Hall."
Clarendon's fists clenched so hard his knuckles popped.
His nails bit into his palms until a thread of blood welled out.
Silence stretched on for dozens of breaths.
He lifted his head and let his gaze sweep over the elders and disciples below the sacred dais.
Fear had swallowed every face in the hall.
The glory the seven celestial branches had once clung to meant less than nothing in front of that fear.
A long time passed before he finally spoke.
"We surrender."
The two words left his mouth with a humiliation heavier than death.
The main gate of Saintspire Court swung open inch by inch.
Clarendon walked out to the court gates himself and handed over everything Saintspire Court had amassed across thirty thousand years.
The ninety-nine sunstones were taken down from the sacred dais. Thousands of saintlight elixirs were sealed into jade caskets. Crystal piled in mountains was packed into Storage Rings. Walls of technique scrolls were carefully carried back to Beastmoor Ridge by the Myriad Arts Order's array masters.
With the Pole Star Hall treasury added in, the resources gathered in Jared's hands had reached a staggering scale.
The full accumulation of two Golden Immortal-level powers.
Hundreds of thousands of crystals, tens of thousands of elixirs, thousands of arcane implements, and more than ten thousand technique scrolls.
It was enough to sustain Beastmoor Ridge, the Wellspring Order, the Azure Cloud Sword Order, and the Deepvault Cloister for thousands of years of cultivation.
But Jared didn't split the resources evenly.
He kept half at Beastmoor Ridge for rebuilding and defense. The other half was moved in its entirety into the Pentacarna Tower.
