"What are you going to do?" Gwendolyn asked.
Jared stayed silent for a long time.
He kept looking toward the place where Josephine had vanished.
That was the north—the same direction as the Northern Abyss Frost Chasm.
"We keep going," he said at last, his voice steady again. "To the Northern Abyss Frost Chasm."
"And then?"
Jared didn't answer.
He pulled his gaze back and walked into the valley basin.
Crouching down, he picked up a crimson short blade that had been left behind—the weapon the middle-aged man he'd killed had dropped.
Dust and blood caked the blade, but the edge was still wickedly sharp.
Jared turned it over.
At the base of the hilt, one small character had been engraved into the metal—"Ember."
A standard-issue arcane implement from the Ember God Palace.
He put the short blade into his Storage Ring, then turned and headed for the hills to the north.
Gwendolyn followed behind him and didn't ask again.
She knew what was on Jared's mind.
The Northern Abyss Frost Chasm lay to the north.
So had the direction Josephine vanished into.
That wasn't a coincidence.
Maybe they would cross paths again on the way to the Northern Abyss Frost Chasm.
Maybe they wouldn't.
Either way, Jared's eyes were fixed on the north now.
In that direction lay not only the ruins of the Frost Deity Branch, but someone he'd believed he would never see again.
They walked in silence for about half an hour.
Gradually, the hills flattened out, and the outline of a sprawling mountain range appeared in the distance.
It was the Ashford Range.
According to the map, once they passed through the outer reaches of the Ashford Range and kept going north for another 3 days, they would reach the Northern Abyss Frost Chasm.
Jared stopped, took out the map slip from his satchel of holding, and checked their direction.
"From here on, we're entering the outer reaches of the Ashford Range," he said. "The map marks this area as demon-beast territory. We need to be careful."
Gwendolyn nodded, one hand settling on her sword hilt as her gaze swept the surroundings.
The two of them kept moving, following a dried riverbed north.
Towering rock walls rose on both sides of the riverbed, thick with moss and tangled vines.
Every now and then, a few small demon beasts darted out of the greenery, caught sight of them, and fled at once.
Jared kept his spirit sense stretched to its limit the entire time.
Everything within 50 miles remained inside his awareness.
More than half an hour had passed since the fight in the valley basin.
The celestial cultivators who'd escaped had probably already made it back to Rookfire, or were on their way there now.
They would definitely report the demons to the Ember God Palace.
Very soon, the Ember God Palace would know that demons had appeared in the region north of Rookfire—and that some of them were above Golden Immortal Level Three.
Which meant this whole area was about to become dangerous.
The Ember God Palace might send people to wipe the demons out.
They might seal off the area.
They might even increase patrol duty.
Jared had to cross the Ashford Range and enter the Northern Abyss Frost Chasm before the Ember God Palace's main force arrived.
The Northern Abyss Frost Chasm was the kind of frozen forbidden lands even Golden Immortal Realm Level Five cultivators didn't enter lightly.
The Ember God Palace certainly wouldn't chase him in there.
Once he got there, he'd be safe.
After another hour of travel, the sky slowly began to darken.
The golden sun and the crimson one had already dropped below the horizon.
Only the bright moon still hung in the sky, spilling its cold silver light across the earth.
Jared found a cave tucked out of sight and decided they would spend the night there.
It was small, about 3 yards deep, with vines draped across the entrance that made it hard to spot.
