"They're still following?" Gwendolyn came over to his side and asked softly.
Jared nodded. "10 miles. Not closer, not farther."
"What are you going to do?"
Jared was quiet for a moment.
"We enter the Northern Abyss Frost Chasm tomorrow. If they keep following, then their target is the Frost Chasm too. We'll deal with it when we see what they're after."
Gwendolyn didn't press him again.
She sat down beside him and looked north as well, toward the ice-blue radiance.
The night wind came down from the north carrying a cold sharp enough to cut.
It was frost energy spilling out from the Northern Abyss Frost Chasm.
Even with several hundred miles still between them, that cold had already reached this place. Which meant the Frost Chasm's true temperature was far worse than the map had shown.
Gwendolyn shivered.
She was the heir to the Frost Deity Branch and cultivated ice-attributed arcane arts. Ordinary cold meant nothing to her.
But the frost energy leaking out of the Northern Abyss Frost Chasm still made her feel cold.
That meant the inner precincts of the Northern Abyss Frost Chasm had reached a temperature so low it was almost unimaginable.
She turned to look at Jared, only to find his face unreadable, as if he didn't feel the cold at all.
Chaotic force flowed around him in a silent, invisible barrier, sealing all the frost energy outside.
Chaos was the origin of all things. It held everything. It suppressed everything.
A little frost like this meant nothing to him.
Gwendolyn looked away, pulled a white fur cloak from her satchel of holding, and wrapped it around herself. Then she took out an ice-blue healing elixir and swallowed it.
Only then did the chill inside her ease a little.
"Tell me something," she said suddenly, her voice barely above a whisper. "Do you think there are really still surviving kin of the Frost Deity Branch inside the Northern Abyss Frost Chasm?"
Jared didn't answer right away.
He closed his eyes and sent his spirit sense into his consciousness field, trying to wake Aldric.
But Aldric's remnant soul lay as silent as the dead, without the slightest response.
"Senior Aldric said he sensed a trace of the Frost Deity Branch's bloodline aura."
Jared opened his eyes, his voice low. "But even he can't be sure whether that belongs to living kin, a remnant soul, or something sealed away."
"So... there might be nothing there at all?" A note of disappointment slipped into Gwendolyn's voice.
"Or there might be everything."
Jared turned to her. In the moonlight, his violet eyes held a soft gleam.
"Whatever's there, we're going to see for ourselves. You came all this way with me for one reason, didn't you? To find your people and restore the Frost Deity Branch."
Gwendolyn stayed silent for a long time, then finally nodded.
"Get some sleep," Jared said as he rose. "We still have a long way to go tomorrow."
He walked to the edge of the rocky platform and sat with his back against a pine tree. He laid the Dragonslayer Sword across his knees, closed his eyes, and slowly set the Focus Technique in motion.
Chaotic force surged through his meridians, stripping away the day's exhaustion bit by bit.
Even so, his spirit sense remained stretched to its limit, covering everything within 50 miles.
The auras of those demonic cultivators were still there. They had stopped in a vale 10 miles away, most likely settling in for the night as well.
Josephine's aura sat at the very center of that group, clear and steady, like a dark red flame burning inside the dark.
As Jared felt that flame from afar, something tangled and wordless moved through his chest.
She was only 10 miles away.
10 miles.
For a Golden Immortal cultivator, that kind of distance could be crossed in an instant.
But he couldn't go to her.
Not because he didn't want to.
Because he couldn't.
He didn't know what identity she carried now. He didn't know who the demonic cultivators at her side really were. He didn't know why she had appeared near the Northern Abyss Frost Chasm.
If he recognized her rashly, he might bring trouble down on her.
