Jared understood.
This was why Cedric had invited him here.
Not for tea. Not for friendship. He wanted Jared to help open that void passage.
"You want me to enter that secret realm and retrieve treasures for you?" Jared asked.
Cedric shook his head.
"Not retrieve treasures for us. Explore it together. The Abyssal Exchange will provide the location of the passage and protection. Mr. Chance will be responsible for getting through it.
"Once we're inside, the treasures of the secret realm are to be taken as each party sees fit. We won't interfere with each other."
He paused, then added, "If Mr. Chance is willing, the Abyssal Exchange can also provide a detailed report on the secret realm. During our efforts to investigate the passage, we gathered some information about what's inside."
Jared stayed silent for a long time.
Then he picked up the teacup and drained the tea inside, though it had already gone cool.
He set the cup down and looked at Cedric with those violet eyes.
"We can try," he said. "But I can't guarantee I'll be able to get through."
A glint flashed through Cedric's eyes, and the smile at his mouth turned more genuine.
"The fact that Mr. Chance is willing to step in is already more than I could ask for."
Jared took the black stone out of his Storage Ring and placed it on the table.
Under the light in the reception chamber, the black stone gave off a faint glow. The sigil-lines across its surface shifted dimly, as if something inside it were still asleep.
"Master Blackwell, have you ever seen anything like this?" Jared asked.
Cedric's gaze dropped to the black stone, and his pupils tightened slightly.
He reached out as if to touch it, but his hand stopped in midair and never came down.
"This is..." Cedric frowned.
"You don't need to know what it is, Master Blackwell. I got it in the Lower Realm. I want the Abyssal Exchange to keep an eye out for it. If this kind of black stone turns up anywhere else, let me know."
Cedric was quiet for a moment, then nodded.
"Rest assured, Mr. Chance. The Abyssal Exchange spans the heavens and the myriad worlds. Our intelligence network is larger than any other power's. If this black stone appears anywhere, we'll know immediately."
He paused, holding Jared's gaze.
"When that happens, I'll inform Mr. Chance personally."
Jared put the black stone back into his Storage Ring.
"Then I have to thank you, Chairman Cedric."
Cedric waved it off, rose to his feet, and crossed to the tall window.
He stood there with his hands behind his back, looking out over the cloud-sea.
"Mr. Jared, stay in the city tonight and get some rest.
First thing tomorrow morning, I'll personally take you to the void passage."
Jared got to his feet as well. "All right."
Cedric turned to Claire.
"Claire, take Mr. Jared to the best guest room and make sure everything is arranged. If he needs anything at all, see that it's provided."
Claire dipped her head slightly. "Yes."
She stepped in front of Jared and gestured toward the door.
"Mr. Jared, this way."
Jared followed Claire out of the reception chamber and into the Teleportation Array.
Light flashed from the array.
The two of them vanished from the ninth layer.
Left alone, Cedric remained by the tall window, watching the cloud-sea outside.
A shrewd light flickered in his red-gold eyes.
His fingers tapped lightly against the window ledge, a soft, steady thump in the quiet room.
"The Aureate Codex. Chaotic force. The inheritance of the Aureate Way..."
He murmured the words to himself, and the smile at the corner of his mouth deepened.
"Jared... what exactly are you?"
No one answered him.
Outside, the cloud-sea rolled under the sunlight.
Stormhaven's floating islands drifted in and out of view through the shifting white, like immortal mountains suspended inside a dream.
Claire led Jared to the seventh layer of the Void Pavilion.
The entire seventh layer was reserved for distinguished guests.
There were only eight rooms on the whole floor, and each one covered dozens of yards, furnished with almost absurd luxury.
Jared's room sat at the very end of the corridor.
The Abyssal Exchange's sigil was carved into the door, and when Claire pushed it open, a spacious suite came into view.
It had everything: a sitting room, a bedchamber, a cultivation room, and a bath.
