Jared stood at the entrance and sent his spirit sense inside.
The cave ran deep. Even after his spirit sense stretched three hundred yards in, it still hadn't found the end.
Branches split off everywhere inside, turning the place into a vast underground labyrinth.
Some of those passages led to dead ends. Some led to traps. Some disappeared into deeper, unknown darkness.
But at the deepest point of the labyrinth, he felt an incredibly powerful surge of spiritual turbulence.
It didn't feel like it came from a living thing. It felt more like the lingering aura of something sealed away, still sleeping.
"There's something in there." Jared drew back his spirit sense and looked at Cedric. "But something about it feels wrong."
"What's wrong with it?" Cedric asked.
"That spiritual turbulence... it's too strong."
Jared's voice dropped. "It doesn't feel like a Golden Immortal rank relic. It doesn't even feel like something of Arch-Immortal rank. If that arcane implement is really this powerful, then with the strength our group has, there's no way we could control it."
Cedric went quiet for a moment, then smiled.
"You're overthinking it, Mr. Chance."
His voice stayed calm, but there was something buried under that calm, something hard to name.
"Ancient relics all have weapon souls. A weapon soul adjusts the relic's output to match the wielder's cultivation.
"If the person using it is weak, the power it releases stays low."
"If the person using it is strong, the power it releases rises with them."
"Our cultivation may not be high, but if we can get that relic, its weapon soul will naturally adapt to us."
He paused, and the smile at the corner of his mouth deepened into something more suggestive.
"And even if that relic really is too powerful for us to control, we can still take it back to the Abyssal Exchange and study it slowly."
"The Abyssal Exchange has plenty of ways to handle an arcane implement at that level."
Jared looked him in the eyes. In those red-gold eyes, there was no evasion, no hesitation—only hunger for treasure, and the kind of fixation that didn't know how to let go.
And still, something about it felt wrong to Jared.
Cedric knew far more about the Ancient Battlefield than his vague claim of having "gathered some information" should have allowed.
He knew there was an altar here. He knew there was an arcane implement on it. He knew the altar was inside the cave.
He even knew the labyrinth inside.
That wasn't the kind of knowledge a person picked up from collected reports.
It felt like he'd been here before.
For the first time, Jared truly got a tangible sense of just how deep the Abyssal Exchange's reach went.
Information on a place like this clearly wasn't something a Golden Immortal Level Four cultivator like Cedric could have gathered on his own.
More likely, it had been passed down from higher powers within the Abyssal Exchange's world above.
"Then let's go in," Jared said, and stepped into the cave first.
Cedric followed behind him, with more than a dozen cultivators of the Abyssal Exchange filing in after them.
The cave was pitch-black, the kind of darkness where he couldn't see his own hand. Chaos-flame burned in Jared's palm, and its violet radiance spilled down the path ahead.
The passage was narrow, barely wide enough for two people to walk side by side. Both stone walls were covered in dense, overlapping gouges, as if something with claws had raked its way through.
The marks ran deep. In some places, they bit several feet into the stone.
There were also faint streaks of black fluid left behind on the walls—the dried remains of some creature's blood.
"Something lives here." Jared stopped and studied the claw marks and the black residue on the stone wall. "And not some ancient creature. These were left recently."
Cedric's expression shifted.
He stepped up to the stone wall, ran his hand across the gouges, rubbed a finger through the black fluid, then lifted it to his nose and smelled it.
"Demon beast."
His voice dropped.
"A demon beast of Golden Immortal rank. Judging by the depth and spacing of these marks, it isn't large—but its strength and speed are both terrifying. If we run into it, don't try to overpower it. Trap it with the formation."
The group kept moving.
The cave sank deeper and deeper, and the branching paths grew more numerous.
Cedric's familiarity with the place went far beyond anything Jared had imagined. At every fork, he chose the right direction almost without pause, moving through the labyrinth like a man taking a casual walk through his own backyard.
Jared followed behind him, a thoughtful look flickering through his violet eyes.
Cedric had been here before.
